How long does it take the IRS to cash my tax payment check?
I mailed my state and federal tax return on Monday, April 18, late in the afternoon, before the deadline.
The state of Georgia presented it to the bank Tuesday afternoon and the payment came out of checking that night. The Feds haven’t processed the check yet, and there is money sitting in my bank account to cover that.
How long does it take the Feds to open and process my tax payment?

I mailed mine in on April 7, it showed up on my bank statement as paid out on April 13.
I have mine taken out of a MMF by EFT and that’s been done already but I would think the checks would take longer.
According to a CNBC report they have a backlog of tens of millions of tax returns before April 18 deadline & plan to have the backlog cleared by the end of this year. So, it might clear tomorrow & it might not clear until Dec 31. Best I can tell you is to be sure to leave that money in your account or that will be the day it clears!!!
I mailed mine on March 17, it showed up as cashed March 30.
Consider that money dedicated to your tax payment as GONE. Why do you care how long it takes to be removed from your account?
I don’t see the urgency to know. And, of course, no one here has the answer. If you are sure your return reached the Treasury mail room you might do well to just not fret about this on an hourly basis. Good luck.
I figured that @elbanditoroso asked the question out of mild curiosity. I sincerely doubt that he thinks that anyone here can answer with an absolute.
Fast. Make sure you have the funds available.
Last December I got a notice from the IRS that they had not received my tax return (it was mailed on March 17th or so) but they did note that they had received the check that was sent in with the return.
I took them just under a month – I paid the taxes on the last day (April 18) and the feds negotiated my check on May 16.
