If you were adding to the EPCOT countries at Disney World, which countries would you recommend?

Asked by JLeslie (65743points) May 10th, 2022 from iPhone

You get four more. There are currently eleven, but let’s go for a few more. What rides, movies, stores, food, or atmosphere would you like to have in each pavilion?

Countries currently represented: Canada, United Kingdom, France, Morocco, Japan, United States, Italy, Germany, China, Norway and Mexico.

Ukraine for sure, before that culture fades from existance.

I’d do something from Africa. I know Morocco is in Africa but something more “African” with safari stuff and things like that. I’d also maybe do Denmark, with lots of blue and white and windmills. It could be really picturesque. It could have lots of tulips, too. There could be a food place with the blue and white china.

Vatican City. They can make a big profit if they charged for admission.

Antarctica – Penguin races and ice sculpting.
Little Italy – You got a problem with that?
India – Bollywoodland.
The ReichDuchy Formerly Known as Florida – Add orange juice, mafia politics, spiced rum, cult evangelists, meth and stir with gun barrel. Serve to aligators and nude retirees.

I’m thinking of visuals, and Tahiti/Polynesia has potential for some visually unique stuff.

I love the India and Bollywood idea, @JLoon. So much color, music and fun!

Animal Kingdom kind of covers Africa, although certainly a country in Africa could be done in EPCOT too. Animal Kingdom has Asia, but there is a China and Japan pavilion at EPCOT.

Malaysia, Thailand, Tahiti, none of those had occurred to me right off that bat, all would be visually beautiful if done right.

I think India would be very well received. The food, the clothing, they could have a wedding party every night, or something else that would be culturally interesting to Americans.

I would add Greece, the food would be popular. It could have a boat ride on the blue waters and pass by many of the ruins and maybe an area with explaining some of the history.

There is a lot of talk about adding Colombia because of the movie Encanto. I haven’t seen the movie.

Peru would be interesting too, or Ecuador and the Galápagos Islands.

Originally, Spain and Israel were on the list, I don’t know what happened to Spain? That would be a good country to have in the mix. Israel was supposed to have an area with traditional music and dancing, which of course sounded really good to me. The food would likely be Mediterranean and delicious. Although, they could also have typical European Jewish food too I guess. There could be a ride, movie, or walking tour of the famous sights. From what I understand the Israel idea was squashed for fears of terrorism.

Dubai is so rich I’m surprised they haven’t vied for a pavilion yet.

There are so many possibilities. I wonder if the countries there made back their money, and how quickly they get a return on their investment? From what I understand they invest millions to develop the pavilions, and I don’t know if they pay money ongoing, or maybe help pay the wages of the people who work in the pavilions that represent the country. I’ve always told my husband he should work in Mexico at EPCOT as a retirement job. The only negative is Mexico is so dark inside, it’s purposefully always night time.

I wonder if WDW will postpone any big projects temporarily until the whole DeSantis fiasco is fixed or not fixed.

Peru, India, Congo/Ghana, Thailand. If I was permitted a bonus pick it’d be one of the Baltic states (we could even drop the USA from the lineup to make room—after all it’s literally everywhere in-and-around the park.

The Iberian Peninsula- Portugal and Spain, with a corner for the Basque region, maybe with a running of the bulls adventure ride, followed by surfing the waves of Nazare.

@jca2 I don’t see any signs of Disney slowing their capital spending for ongoing projects. A new ride, Guardians of the Galaxy in EPCOT, is in the middle of a soft opening now, officially opening May 27th. The next new ride to open is going to be Tron, which is in Magic Kingdom, is in the middle of being built. There are large areas of EPCOT barricaded the last year from what I understand for renovations, maybe some of that has opened up by now. As far as I know it has been full steam ahead. Maybe though, they won’t schedule anything new until it is straightened out? I haven’t heard anything about that.

Note that EPCOT’s 40th anniversary is this October. I wish it wasn’t. Obviously, it will continue to drive big crowds to the parks. This past several months has been VERY CROWDED. Some of us were secretly hoping if the Republicans are angry at Disney and boycott, maybe we would get a little bit of a beak with the crowds.

@gorillapaws I always thought it was odd to have the US in the group, and I find it the most boring of all of the pavilion, especially when I was a kid. I appreciate it a little more as an adult. It could have been a much more fabulous experience than it is.

@JLeslie Guardians of the Galaxy and Tron are in the works already and so my question is about new development. To me, if something is on the verge of opening, it’s been in the works for a year or more so was pre-DeSantis fiasco.

@SnipSnip Great food and Jeannie was born in Beirut! I guess Jeannie isn’t Disney, but she is Florida.

@jca2 That very well could be correct. It might only affect projects not started yet.
