Is the current price of gasoline, Capitalism at it's worst?

Asked by SQUEEKY2 (23442points) May 20th, 2022

Here in B.C we pay the highest gas prices in North America.
A us gallon is $7.78.
I am all for companies making a fair profit but this is just pure greed.
Yeah, I know price and demand blah, blah.
Shouldn’t there be some kind of regulation, to keep these companies from totally screwing the working slob?

Nah.
Capitalism at its worst is child labour, forced prison labour, company towns, sweatshops, corporate militias murdering union leaders, workers burning to death in factories due to lack of safety measures, workers jumping off of rooftops to escape the quasi slavery. etc. pp.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Don’t go to Italy it is (in USD) $7.226 per gallon.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Wow we beat Italy for gas price here in B.C.^^

ragingloli's avatar

After some conversion, it is 8.44$ per gallon here., or 2.13€/L.

gondwanalon's avatar

It’s Joe Biden at his best.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

I assumed you’re talking Canadian dollars so that would be 7.78 times 0.78 or $6.07 USD.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Ya @gondwanalon Biden has that knob under his desk jack up gas prices. . . .

HA-HA-HA!
The whole world is in this; with prices rising.

@gondwanalon
Can you legitimately help us understand why you think a single guy did this? Any empirical evidence?
Even I’m not dense enough to blame everything on Bush for example. This is a multifaceted issue, I thought.

kritiper's avatar

No. It’s just shit happening.

gondwanalon's avatar

@Blackberry Oh, like the President of the United States is just some guy. Good one! In this case you are correct. HA!

JLeslie's avatar

Not it’s worst, but yeah it is capitalism taking advantage of the expectation of higher prices and the willingness of consumers to pay.

A friend said to me a couple of days ago these oil companies are going to get as much as they can the next few years, because there is a concerted effort to phase out fossil fuels as much as possible.

No, it’s what the World Economic Forum is calling The Great Reset, in which they are trying to reinvent and reset capitalism. This has become a rebranding and continuation of the UN Agenda 21, which was signed by George Bush and 177 other countries in 1992.
In order to reset things, they need to collapse things and bring society to a tipping point where we have no choice but to accept the solution the “experts” have to make things better. The same experts who have been arguably creating many of these problems.

None of what they are doing is hidden and they have websites with articles from agenda contributors that people from all around the world will be familiar with, as well as videos from their conferences.

The founder, Klaus Schwab, has stated “The pandemic represents a rare narrow window of opportunity to reflect, reimagine, and reset our world.” https://www.weforum.org/agenda/2020/06/now-is-the-time-for-a-great-reset/

They are holding their 2022 meeting in Davos starting in two days and here are the attendees. https://thenationalpulse.com/2022/05/20/full-list-of-world-economic-forum-attendees/

Please don’t just take my word for it. I have provided official links directly from their website for you to view for yourself.

The phrase “Build Back Better” stems from the UN and has been used over the past few years by the WEF and has been repeated by most world leaders including Biden and Trudeau.

In my neck of the woods it’s (US) $3.50–3.80. Not really higher than it’s been many times before.

Right, like Biden controls the world prices. pffffft

SQUEEKY2's avatar

Remember @smudges to the Rep/cons everything wrong in the world is the Democrats fault.
Also remember Obama legislated the auto makers to produce better economy engines and just a stroke of the pen Trump with drew that.
Yeah the good ole rep/cons they are on the side of the little working slob,NOT!!

smudges's avatar

^ Oh, I thought gondwanalon was just criticizing Biden in order to blame “the President” for anything and everything they don’t agree with, which is common among both parties.

WhyNow's avatar

The current price of gasoline is government at its worst.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Government is not setting prices @WhyNow, the oiil companies do that and are at higher profits.

So many people think that the President has a knob under his desk in the Oval Office jack the prices up. SMH

smudges's avatar

Not to mention the President hardly sets gas prices in other countries, which are higher also.

JLeslie's avatar

Right now in the US it is Memorial Day Weekend so of course gas is even more up, because demand is very high. All those people taking a vacation.

WhyNow's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Government sets the supply… which dictates prices.
More supply = lower prices.

JLeslie's avatar

^^According to Biden and Pete Buttigieg the US government has no restrictions on supply right now and the corporation choose to restrict supply and gouge.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

“Government sets the supply… which dictates prices.”

Source please or . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .. that your opinion ?

Maybe you are thinking about Putin ?

WhyNow's avatar

Regulations… No new transport permits are given non. Not on water or land.
Environmental regulations make producing too onerous, maybe rightfully so.
The results are thousands of privateers cannot get funding for their projects.
Big oil just doesn’t bother.

WhyNow's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Who told you I think about Putin?
Can you cite a source… or is this your opinion?

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@WhyNow Still going with your opinions?

Missing your source !

Putin controls by his government; the supply and cost of all oil in Russia. We are not in Russia.

Petroleum is free market. There are no restriction on oil, only in the imagination of some.

Why than are the oil companies making billions of extra profit ??

WhyNow's avatar

@WhyNow I really have no idea what you’re saying.
Making profits!? Oh the humanity!

Tropical_Willie's avatar

@WhyNow you don’t make sense, why are you talking in riddles and circles ?

WhyNow's avatar

@Tropical_Willie I truly apologize for talking in riddles and circles. Let try to clarify even to
myself… out loud.

It started at the baby formula post when I sarcastically claimed evil republicans wanted to
kill babies even putting them in closets so not to hear them cry… you agreed… funny to
me because Barack Obama was the only member of his state senate (I think) to vote down
the born alive law after a nurse testified of putting born alive aborted fetuses in closets until
they stopped crying and died. He said calling a doctor would be an inconvenience.

Than you wanted me to source the causation between the government and supply of
crude oil… funny to me because you said I was thinking of Putin… even tho
you have no sources to cite.

That’s when I got lost.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

So you are talking in circles, riddles and sarcastic comments!

Have NICE DAY ! ~ ~ ~ ~

@Tropical_Willie The OP reminds me so much of @chefl

The govt is suppressing the supply by discouraging oil exploration and b/c of the supply disruptions and sanctions involved in Ukraine. There are large and rising taxes on gasoline in most countries. Inflation has been running wild in the west for awhile, but was hidden by the pandemic and by developing nations like China buying up dollars.

Exactly which of these problems is ‘capitalism’ to you? Gas prices are high because of government’s actions. And I don’t have a problem with that. In fact, I think gas taxes should be high to encourage the adoption of alternatives and to encourage people to buy fuel efficient vehicles.
