What is the Johnny Depp Amber Heard thing?

Asked by Dutchess_III (47126points) May 20th, 2022

Who’s suing who and why? What does one of them stand to “win”?
And why do we get to see all the private ugliness in public?

It’s the weirdest trial I’ve ever seen. This is the defamation case Mr Depp filed against Ms Heard after he lost his case.
Pooping in the bed, cutting off fingers, Momoa’s testimony. It all seems like a farce.

Another celebrity ego orgy.

Two of the most self indulgent, overrated, perverse, “talents” in the entertainment industry are misusing the legal system and exploiting the media to beat each other up in public after a predictably dysfunctional marriage.

The excuse is a jacked up defamation lawsuit, and an equally ridiculous counter-suit. The goal for both of them is Mutually Assured Career Destruction.

I wish them complete success, and look forward to never seeing another film featuring either of their pathetic personalities.

What was HIS case prior to this about @KNOWITALL?

Heard wrote an op-ed, in which she, without naming him, accused Depp of being guilty of Domestic Violence.
Depp sued her for defamation.
Heard counter-sued him.
They both seem to be no angels.
Both fought (with words, as being evident in audio clips, that mainly Heard recorded (I think Depp too, but to a lesser extent)).
Heard evidently struck Depp.
Depp says he never struck Heard.
Heard appears to be lying in court (as has been obvious on a few occasions already).
Depp was seen demolishing kitchen cabinets, when he was drunk (Heard recorded it with her phone).

Depp will never (be allowed to) play a pirate anymore (Disney cancelled him).
Heard, apparently, will be struck out of Aquawoman (or see her role minimised).
It’s freaking boring, embarrassing, yet, sometimes entertaining.
Heard’s defence team look like noobs, for example.
My prediction: Depp will be the victor (if only in the hearts and minds of the public.
Heard will be seen as the perpetrator, manipulator, instigator, general baddy.

It’s just a couple fighting a legal battle with their excess money, only this time it’s different because they’re famous.

Regular upper middle class people do the same thing, it’s just not televised.

How is there so much recordings? Who recorded their every conversation?

So what does the winner get?

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Dutchess_III There’s a few. This one is for $50 million.

I mean, I’ve watched him since 21 Jump Street, and enjoy some of his work, but they’re pretty kooky, seperately (her own sister is scared of Amber.) Together they were toxic.

@JLoon All of this. 100%.

It’s ridiculous that people are actually taking sides and battling over it on the internet (seen it blow up on numerous sites).

I am leaning towards the same conclusion as the common Cardassian crime novel:
They are all guilty, but who is guilty of what and to which degree is what needs to be found out.

Heard tried to take advantage of the #MeTooMovement but she’s not a very good liar!!! After her accusations, Depp was cancelled by Disney & Warner Brothers. He will no longer be Captain Jack Sparrow. He also lost his role as Grindelwald in the JK Rowling Sequel Fantastic Beast. All because she accused him of abusing her. He gave her the divorce that she wanted plus $7 million, but she wouldn’t keep her mouth shut, so he’s suing her for $50 million!!! Just to be a bitch, she’s countersuing him for $100 million. To add insult to injury, she was screwing Elon Musk & James Franco in his bed when he was out of town. That’s why he & his female lawyer are showing a very public display of affection & his lawyer is grilling her while she’s assuming that the lawyer is her replacement!!!

It’s basically 2 grown ass adults acting like they are 2 year olds!!!

@rebbel Perfect, succinct description. I believe they’re both guilty to some extent, but am rooting for Mr. Depp.

I’m sure JD and AH are not the first celebrities who have engaged in drug use, drunken fights and other crazy shit, but now that it’s all public news, employers can’t look the other way so sadly, their careers are just about over. Especially with a company like Disney, which has an image to maintain. I’m wondering if, at the start of the both of them suing each other, they imagined that all this stuff would come out in the open. It seems like a rabbit hole that they both keep going down and down into.

Celebrity trash. My prediction? The winners will be the lawyers.

Thing? Revenge.

This kind of reminds me of the Charlie Sheen disaster from about 8 years ago. It was interesting to watch, for a minute, but then he just ruined any chances of ever getting hired by anybody in the future due to being unstable and proving it.

Johnny Depp is suing Amber Heard for defamation. She implied that he had committed domestic violence against her.

A court in the UK has already concluded that he did in fact commit domestic violence against her.

The truth is an absolute defense against defamation, so his lawsuit has no legitimate legal basis. Depp has launched a misinformation and smear campaign via social media to paint Heard as the “real” abuser, giving the appearance that his real goal is not to win the lawsuit, but to continue to torment his ex-wife. It appears to be succeeding.

LadyMarissa's avatar

The court’s decision in a 2019 defamation case involving two UK newspaper publishers established that the threshold test for “serious harm” in defamation actions has been significantly raised under the 2013 Defamation Act. This has made it more difficult for claimants to succeed in their actions.

I don’t think the UK courts said that Depp had in fact committed domestic violence against Heard. They did say that he did NOT prove that “The Sun” had libeled him thereby causing “serious harm” to him & his career. It appears to me that they are abusive to each other & the relationship is very toxic to say the least!!! It appears to me that they still LOVE each other or they wouldn’t care at all!!!

Maybe we should bring back dueling & let them duel it out!!!

smudges's avatar

Ah well…you know what opinions are like. Heard’s abuse has also been proven; she has admitted it.

jellyjellyjelly's avatar

Ah, yes, the classic legal defense: “She started it!!!!”

The legal question at hand is whether it is defamatory for Heard to state that Depp abused her. If Depp abused Heard, it is not defamatory, and it is irrelevant if Heard abused Depp as well. It has already been adjudicated and ruled in a court of law that Depp abused Heard.

Be careful which youtube rabbit holes you get sucked down into. Not everything you read on the internet is true (or relevant). If you’re interested in the established legal facts of the case, please see the lengthy judgment I linked above.

@jellyjellyjelly Ah, yes, the classic legal defense: “She started it!!!!”

That’s not even close to what I said. I said everyone has opinions. The case in England is over and done with and irrelevant to this case. And btw, courts have been found to be wrong. Ever heard of The Innocence Project?

The current case is about an op-ed she wrote in which she, without naming him, accused him of being guilty of domestic violence. He’s lost jobs due to that. That is why he’s suing, and she’s countersuing.

I won’t bother reviewing the case you’re referring to because it is old news and independent of this case. And I rarely look at youtube.

Celebrity squabbles – I have been trying to avoid. He said / she said. Let the dust settle to see who was telling the truth.

jca2's avatar

@RocketGuy: I don’t think we’ll know who’s telling the truth. Just because something is decided upon in Court doesn’t make it the truth or acccurate.

smudges's avatar

@jca2 You got it! Just as with criminal court cases; remember OJ’s trial.
