How many times has Buffy died?

Asked by KatawaGrey (21483points) September 17th, 2008

On the show Buffy the Vampire Slayer, there are really only two times that everyone can agree she’s died: the season 1 finale and the season 5 finale. I want to know how many times you all think she has died. personally, I say three because she flatlined before Willow could get the bullet out in the season 6 finale but people tend to dispute this. Also, there is the episode The Wish where Buffy in the alternate universe dies. Any thoughts, please,

Not enough to get me vaugely interested.

I go with the two. In Season six, that is an NDE not death since she was revived. And alternate universes never count.

Welcome to the collective.

trudacia's avatar

She died twice. In Season One (the Master) and again in Season Five (Glory).

tinyfaery's avatar

Yup. Twice.

cyndyh's avatar

I’d go with what Buffy sings in Once More With Feeling.
“Hey, I’ve died twice”

KatawaGrey's avatar

Normally, I’d agree with you, but that was before the evil Willow episodes so I’m still left wondering. The general consensus seems to be that she has only died twice.

cheebdragon's avatar

There is a “general consensus” about how many times buffy the vampire slayer has died?

EmpressPixie's avatar

@cheeb: You would not believe the hubbub about Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It’s a true modern marvel. She’s the subject of college courses, religions, and feminist forums. The subject of value systems. A way of teaching kids. It’s… amazing. There are books about the books about her.

EmpressPixie's avatar

also, I go with two because I stopped watching after the season five finale, I just thought it was such a great place to end

KatawaGrey's avatar

@EmpressPixie…admittedly, the show got a helluva lot more somber after season five, but seasons six and seven have some wonderful episodes. Season six has the musical and the memory loss as well as some fun adventures in the fast food industry. Season seven is epic, pure and simple. the way they end the series is even better than the season five finale. I would be very interested in hearing what you have to say about the end of season six, where the confusion for me about the number of deaths Buffy has experienced arises.

cheebdragon's avatar

I lost all interest when Angel left the show.

tinyfaery's avatar

@Empress Season 6 is my favorite season. It tackles the ennui of living; it’s Buffy’s existential crisis. How can you just stop when the story is not over! Watch it now! I’ll send you my discs if you need them. :)

cyndyh's avatar

There’s some great stuff in seasons 6 and 7 and in the comic series Season 8.

@KatawaGrey: I think I have to re-watch the end of season 6 now.

KatawaGrey's avatar

@cyndyh: In the episode “Villians” Buffy is in the hospital and Willow comes in. Right before Willow removes the bullet, it sounds like Buffy flatlines. When you watch it, you’ll understand my confusion.

cyndyh's avatar

Ok, I’ll do that.

tinyfaery's avatar

Ahh! Good point katawa. That is technically dead; she was only dead about a minute before Xander brought her back in season 1. I say three times. Thanks for this. See, you can learn something new from something you have watched many, many, many times.

trudacia's avatar

Does the death only count if a new slayer is chosen?
I guess it doesn’t matter because Faith was technically a slayer in season 6.

KatawaGrey's avatar

See, that raises a whole new series of questions. Once Buffy died the first time, Kendra was called. Then when Kendra died, Faith was called. I wonder if any more Slayers were called from when Buffy died the second and third times. I think she might be off the new-slayer-being-called-radar.

tinyfaery's avatar

Well season 7 makes that a moot point. Now all potential slayers are called to service.

trudacia's avatar

When she died the second and third times Faith was already a slayer, so a new slayer was not needed/chosen.

Wow..I’m a big Buffy nerd, huh?

KatawaGrey's avatar

Exactly, so Buffy doesn’t count as The Slayer anymore. Now she’s just a slayer and Faith is The Slayer.

@tinyfaery I have to wonder if all future potential slayers born will be slayers or if there will never be any more potentials again.

tinyfaery's avatar

So, whenever a slayer dies, a new slayer isn’t necessarily called? If this were so, when Kendra died, another new slayer should have been called. If weird stuff happens, and two slayers exist at the same, when each dies, shouldn’t a slayer be called each time? Resulting in two new slayers.

No definitive answer, just a thought.

There is no reason new slayers can’t be born.

But Buffy is the OG, even if she did die, she is now alive. But I see your point. Maybe Faith is The Slayer?

I have the comics too. :)

trudacia's avatar

Faith was called when Kendra died. I think.

Tiny, I don’t think you count Buffy anymore… so a new slayer wouldn’t be called unless Faith died.

Now I’m confused.

tinyfaery's avatar

Thinking out loud: Buffy died. Kendra came. Kendra died, Faith came (even though Buffy was alive, which would validate my point that whenever a slayer dies, even if one already exists, a new slayer is called; resulting in two slayers). Buffy died again, but Faith still existed. So, before all slayer potentials were called, a new slayer rose. We are missing her story people. I’ll call her Joan. :)

This is fun.

cyndyh's avatar

I think it’s best to look at it like this. The pointer’s on Faith now. ...until the season 7 anyway.

If someone had been called when Buffy died the second time we would have heard at least mention of it from the council. We didn’t.

trudacia's avatar

I’m with you until Joan…
So I don’t think Joan gets called because Buffy doesn’t count anymore. Faith is the slayer, only if she dies will Joan be called…???

Edit: cyndyh: Yup..agreed.

KatawaGrey's avatar

I have recently wondered about this very subject because we hear about the other slayers who get called but not “Joan.” Since the hellmouth is a center of mystical convergence and since the other slayers keep getting called there, it would stand to reason that Joan would have gotten called there as well. Since she wasn’t. I’m assuming that Joan does not exist yet. Well, she does now, but only cuz Willow worked her awesome mojo. :)

tinyfaery's avatar

Maybe Joan is in Cleveland. :)

tinyfaery's avatar

But really. Faith? The show is called Buffy The Vampire Slayer. Plus, Faith is all psycho. She is way sexier though.

KatawaGrey's avatar

Yeah, but her sexiness is invalidated by the fact that she is extremely insane. That and she’s the muscle for a giant snake which adds just another level of weirdness. :P

cheebdragon's avatar

didnt faith have “sex” with angel?

KatawaGrey's avatar

No, never with angel. She had sex with Riley (after she and Buffy switched bodies) and with Xander, and with Principal Wood, but never with Angel.

tinyfaery's avatar

You beat me.

KatawaGrey's avatar

Apologies, tiny. You’ll have to field questions for a while cuz I need to go dye a friend’s hair for her. Good luck!

tinyfaery's avatar

Will have to wait. Gotta go to work. But I’ll be on in a few hours.

tinyfaery's avatar

Cordelia and Xander never had sex? I think they did. Though I cannot think of a reference.

I really must leave now.

cheebdragon's avatar

is it saying that faith kissed angel or faith, angel, and harmony kissed?

cyndyh's avatar

@tinyfaery: Nope, Cordelia and Xander were already broken up when Xander gets together with Faith and states he’s never “been up… with people”. Faith was his first.

@KatawaGrey: On Faith and her “sexiness is invalidated by the fact that she is extremely insane”. That means she’s spent time on the wrong side of the “Mendoza Diagonal”. :^>

tinyfaery's avatar

Oh yeah. I thought Cordelia would have been an easier lay than she actually was. :)

trudacia's avatar

I don’t know why Harmony is overlapping like that. I only remember her with Spikey.

tinyfaery's avatar

Was there some sort of tryst on Angel? I never watched that.

trudacia's avatar

With, Angel, Harmony and Faith? Definitely not. He may have kissed Faith at some point but never Harmony.

tinyfaery's avatar

Well I didn’t mean together. I don’t remember a Faith and Angel kiss. The last time they were together was when Faith wanted Angel to kill her (on Angel). I know Harmony showed up as a regular on Angel, but I don’t know any story lines. Maybe we should email the chart maker and ask for clarification.

cyndyh's avatar

I think there should at least be a dotted kiss line between Darla and Drucilla.

trudacia's avatar

Yeah, I guess I don’t remember. Harmony was Angel’s assistant and I’m pretty sure they never hooked up.

I’m surprised you didn’t watch Angel tiny. Any plans to watch in the future?

tinyfaery's avatar

I watched most of season 1, and it was okay. Angel was never really my favorite character. He’s all broody and tortured. I’m a Spike girl. He has a sense of fun and a rebellious nature.

tinyfaery's avatar

I just clicked the raw data link to the chart. It explains. Check it out and get back to me.

No mention of Harmony except for sex with Spike.

trudacia's avatar

Spike is on the last season of angel. Although few and far between, there were some good episodes with Buffy characters. One with Andrew was hysterical…

Checking out the chart…

trudacia's avatar

I thought I remembered Faith and Angel kissing.. So it was when he was pretending to be without a soul. Makes sense.

cyndyh's avatar

Faith and Angel did kiss during the whole trying to find out the mayor’s plan for graduation thing.

tinyfaery's avatar

Man I’m rusty. I guess I should start with season 1 and go through them all again. Oh how horrible! ;)

Zaku's avatar

There’s a Buffy computer game that’s reportedly good, so I’d say she’s probably died an extremely large number of times. Millions.

KatawaGrey's avatar

hahaha, nice loophole, zaku. Though I suspect cyberspace would fall under the realm of other dimensions…

Lannikat's avatar

Alright, I just read through the entire thing and, I guess, I wanted to talk. I dunno how old this is or anything, but I’m still gonna answer. Buffy died four times to me. The Master, the portal, the bullet, and whatever she had gotten stabbed with in Chosen. Some may disagree with me, but that’s how many times she died to me.

When Buffy died in season 1, Kenda was Called, then Faith when Kendra died. No new Slayer was Called because, contrary to popular believe, after season 1 Buffy was no longer THE Slayer. Yes, she was A Slayer, but after Kendra was Called she wasn’t THE Slayer.

trudacia: that episode was pretty funny. I loved when Andrew threw it into Angel’s face that Buffy don’t care for him anymore at the end when they took Dana back to HQ.

tinyfaery's avatar

What makes you think Buffy died during the fight with the ubervamps?

Lannikat's avatar

Because…she was down before suddenly getting back up! I dunno…I guess she didn’t

Loved Angel and Buffy together!
