Remember that God gave Moses the ten commandments from which many other laws followed. Yes, God expected people to obey the laws. Exodus 20:1–17 and Deuteronomy 5:6–21
Matthew 22:15–22. “Tell us, then, what you think. Is it lawful to pay taxes to Caesar, or not?” But Jesus, aware of their malice, said, “Why put me to the test, you hypocrites? Show me the coin for the tax.” And they brought him a denarius. And Jesus said to them, “Whose likeness and inscription is this?” They said, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s.” When they heard it, they marveled. And they left him and went away.
Also, Mark 12:17 And Jesus answering said unto them, Render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s, and to God the things that are God’s. And they marvelled at him.
@zenvelo @SnipSnip Thanks, but those weren’t the quotes I was looking for. I might have to spend the whole weekend reading the bible to find it.
@RedDeerGuy1 If you have an idea of how it was phrased, please share. But the citations given refer to obligations to obey the civil authorities and laws.
“Submit yourselves for the Lord’s sake to every human authority: whether to the emperor, as the supreme authority, or to governors, who are sent by him to punish those who do wrong and to commend those who do right.”
—1 Peter 2: 13–14
“Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good.”
—Titus 3:1
“Let everyone be subject to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God. Consequently, whoever rebels against the authority is rebelling against what God has instituted, and those who do so will bring judgment on themselves. For rulers hold no terror for those who do right, but for those who do wrong. Do you want to be free from fear of the one in authority? Then do what is right and you will be commended. For the one in authority is God’s servant for your good. But if you do wrong, be afraid, for rulers do not bear the sword for no reason. They are God’s servants, agents of wrath to bring punishment on the wrongdoer. Therefore, it is necessary to submit to the authorities, not only because of possible punishment but also as a matter of conscience. This is also why you pay taxes, for the authorities are God’s servants, who give their full time to governing. Give to everyone what you owe them: If you owe taxes, pay taxes; if revenue, then revenue; if respect, then respect; if honor, then honor.”
—Romans 13:1–7
@zenvelo Sorry was 20 years ago when I heard it. It was basically that a church should follow the rules of the land that it is in?
@RedDeerGuy1 Maybe you should have put that in your question.
@SavoirFaire Titus 3:1 and Romans 13:1–7 might be Is it. Thanks.
@SnipSnip Those details didn’t come to me until well after when I asked the question.
