Is this a good business idea? (Details Inside)

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) June 10th, 2022

Where a pawn shop comes to your home and offers you cash or credit for your stuff that has value, and halls the rest of the stuff to the trash for you?

Just wondering because I have too much stuff, and not all of it is useless crap. I don’t have a car/truck and I can’t carry that much weight.

Does a company like that exist?

There are companies who will haul you crap away and can take anything they want in the haul. Look for signs with phone numbers in town…usually stapled to telephone poles at major intersections. I’ve seen about five signs recently. I think these businesses were born due to people renting storage rooms and not paying the rent. The storage companies just want the units cleaned out….a win win (if you don’t mind fooling with strangers’ crap).

When Mom died, I offered everything in her house to the family. Once they took what they wanted, the rest was picked up by an “auctioneer company”. The advantage was that it was quick. The downside was that we netted very little money for what we felt it was worth. I suspect that the issue had more to do with our sentimental value versus its actual worth.

For large pieces of old/antique furniture, yes. Auction houses and used furniture houses will come and give you a value for the items. Price should include them taking it away. “Smalls” and jewelry may need a specialist.

^^ They will charge you for their expertise.

@smudges We weren’t charged for their expertise. They came and did an assessment, took away what wasn’t wanted, gave us a date and link for the auction, and sent us a check when it was done.

I could have taken the time and attempted to sell it on FB Market or another site, and it may have garnered more money. The challenge was that none of us lived there and the house was up for sale, so it needed to be cleared out. An auction house worked well for us.

@RedDeerGuy1 It will be a challenge to find someone to offer the price you expect, unless you are willing to devote the time to pursuing obtaining your price because you can wait for the buyer who will purchase it at your price.

It’s your choice.

@Pied_Pfeffer You’re lucky! I was charged.
