Which states have the biggest rivalry?

Asked by Jons_Blond (8253points) June 14th, 2022 from iPhone

Can you share some examples of state rivalries?

For example: Wisconsin and Illinois. Those of us in Wisconsin can’t stand people from Illinois. They invade our state like roaches. There’s also the rivalry between the Bears and Packers. Brewers and Cubs.

This isn’t the biggest rivalry but one I’m most familiar with. I’d love to hear what you all can come up with.

If you are not in the states but have an equivalent example from where you live, please share.

Everyone vs. Californians. They raised everyone’s rent lol.

Georgia & Alabama
Georgia & Louisiana

Ohio and Michigan (they fought a war – look it up)

Rhode Island, on the other hand, gets along with everyone.

I’m sure there’s no ill intent behind this question. But doesn’t bringing up kneejerk rivalries between states just emphasize hostilities among Americans when the last thing we need is more of that?

Northern California vs. Southern California?

Jons_Blond's avatar

@Jeruba No. It’s all in good fun. This is why I asked in social. There’s nothing wrong with friendly rivalries.

@filmfann Good one! I felt the pull in both directions when I lived in San Luis Obispo. :)

I’m going to agree with Michigan vs. Ohio, and California vs. everyone.

Maybe also West Virginia and Kentucky? At least back in the day of the Hatfield’s and the McCoy’s. I don’t know if that legacy lives on in any way in those states today. We need our WV jelly to chime in on that.

Another might be Massachusetts and New York with the rivalry between the Red Sox and the Yankees.

Well, as I recall, the Mainiacs (aka Down Easters) don’t think too much of the Bay Staters.

West Virginia, vs. Virginia. It’s less of a rivalry and more of a “holy fucking hell, West Virginia is depressing.” It looks like a developing country in many parts.

Alabama, The Iron Bowl, Alabama vs. Auburn.

Alabama doesn’t play Georgia in football in regular season. They did play in the national championship game last year. Auburn/Georgia is one of the oldest football rivalries in existence today.

Bavaria and Germany.

Growing up in Minnesota brings out a natural rivalry with Wisconsin.
Living in New England however has shown me the biggest one I have seen in Boston vs New York City. This is on every level of sports, academics, medicine, business, and social aspects.

I’ve lived in five US states and have never observed a rivalism between two of them. Sports? Possibly, but that can apply to teams within one state.

Tennessee and Alabama.

There were actually bumper stickers and hats that referred to the rivalry between the Vols and the Crimson Tide. They said: “Avoid The Rush! Hate Bama Early!”

Why is North Dakota so windy?
Because Montana sucks and Minnesota blows.

I think Alaska might be Alaska vs the lower or contiguous 48, but not necessarily the reverse.
