What's the most expensive thing you've ever bought?

Asked by Nimis (13260points) September 18th, 2008

Not including your home, car, computer, or education. Did you buy it for yourself? Why did you buy it? Do you ever regret buying it? Would you buy it again today? If not, how would you spend the money instead?

I bought my TV. Nothing fancy… 36” LCD flat panel. $900something.

I bought it because my ex was taking the good TV and I wanted a better TV so he could drool over it while he took the one he fought so hard to keep. it worked like a friggin charm.

I regret buying it only when I see it in the same store I bought it in for $350 less… but that’s nearly 3 years later.

I would buy it again today… it’s cheaper!

sorry, did not read the details…

have to exclude any home improvement projects too then…..

The prom dress I wore to my boyfriend’s prom senior year of high school. It cost around $250. I bought it about four months before prom because I saw it in a store and absolutely fell in love. It was so worth it. I still have it and while I will probably never wear it again, I still like to look at it sometimes. :)

A marriage license.

Furniture & home repairs (most recent: concrete driveway…yikes!)

augustlan's avatar

A divorce.

augustlan's avatar

To answer the question more seriously, good furniture (Mitchell Gold + Bob Williams). From a real furniture store. It was so worth it.

ciripet's avatar

my dog, over 1,500 not including the vet.

Randy's avatar

Hmmmm… Maybe a Gibson Firebird. It was around $1200. I bought it, but never got it because they discontinued it about a month after I ordered it.

tinyfaery's avatar

I guess my iphone; I love it. Then my sunglasses; I love them too. I’m up there with Sarah Palin.

Sloane2024's avatar

David Yurman’s “Cotton Candy Collection” in pink sapphire. The bracelet was $1900, the necklace was $850 and the ring was $850. I absolutely LOVE them! :D

KatawaGrey's avatar

@tinyfaery But only if they’re made in Japan!

flameboi's avatar

I have a long list that includes, but is not limited to:
A timepiece
A key ring
A ring
Shoes
Ties
Sunglases
A Big Bad lcd
My powerful suits (3)
Lots of clothing

Why did I buy those things?

2 reasons

1. Pure pleasure
2. It’s a motivational thing (specially the time piece and the key ring), I’m leaving my best years behind a desk… I have to make it worth it

tinyfaery's avatar

Wait. I forgot the wedding ring I bought for my wife. That is the most expensive thing I have ever purchased, and it was not for myself.

Comedian's avatar

I’m saving up my money to buy a King Arthur helmet. It’s 249 dollars. I only need $137.68 more!

flameboi's avatar

@ Comedian
Is the helmet for one of your performances just curious

Comedian's avatar

what? oh no. One, for my halloween costume and also just for fun

helmet

jasongarrett's avatar

The diamond for my wife’s engagement ring. Best purchase I’ve ever made. :-)

Nimis's avatar

Poof: Effective!
Kata: Why won’t you wear it again?
Astro: Ha…good one.
Ciri: Did you buy from a breeder?
Randy: Were you sad or relieved?
Sloane: How often do you use them?
Flame: I like how the LCD was appended with Big Bad.
Tiny ‘n’ Jason: Ooph, yes. Expensive! Do your wives wear their engagement rings with their wedding rings on a daily basis?
Com: A helmet! That’s a new one! It would definitely make everyday mundane chores more interesting. Imagine wearing that with an old shirt and tee at the laundromat.

Nimis's avatar

Aside from the answers of marriage and/or divorce, no buyers’ remorse here?
Is that because it takes a while to save up for a big purchase?
(And it gives you time to think it over?)

Or you just know what you want?

JackAdams's avatar

The silence of a witness.

Cost me $45,000

Don’t ask…

my bed—those are expensive! So I really splurged and got a set that cost a grand but it is SO worth it. I adore my bed so much. You practically fall asleep in seconds.

Nimis's avatar

Emp: Oh, man. I hear you. Am thinking about getting a down feather top.
With the really good ones, it feels like you’re sleeping on a poofy cloud.

Yummy.
Most ideal situation: Down pillow top, down comforter and down pillows. Swathed in love!

iwamoto's avatar

i buy expensive stuff everyday, it’s the grand total that’s the real hammer, i mean, 830 for my camera last month is nothing if i do a quick math sum, i have 236 videogames on the shelf right now, let’s say each one cost me..45 bucks, so yeah, that’s $10.620 bucks on videogames alone, not to mention the consoles that go with ‘em, well, my ibanez 7 string was $1280, that was one of the most expensive single purchases i made

Judi's avatar

Does real estate NOT your home count?

Judi's avatar

I just ordered one of these
powerplate.com
But I have bought other things more expensive.

Nimis's avatar

Judi: Hmmm…no, different.
I guess investing in real estate counts.
Any regrets?

Nimis's avatar

Judi: I’m looking at it…but I still don’t know what it is!
Some type of exercise equipment? But how exactly?

Nimis's avatar

Iwam: Do you use all of those on a somewhat regular basis?

iwamoto's avatar

yeah, finished around 70% of them, and i have them for collectors value as well, well, mostly my own value, must have’s etc.

but do you guys think it’s a lot ? i mean, i think it’s so so

Nimis's avatar

Iwam: From a non-gamer perspective, yes.
From the perspective of someone whose partner works at a video game company, no.

I just know a lot of people who don’t get through 70% of their games though.
Do they really have collectors value?

shadling21's avatar

An HD camcorder. Mulled it over for a few months, then bought it. One of my most prized possessions.

iwamoto's avatar

to me they have, i mean, if i tell you i have stuff like both shenmue’s for the dreamcast it won’t mean that much, but i couldn’t do with just one, but hey, my entire collection can be seen here, maybe you’ll see something you find more amazing, haha

deaddolly's avatar

i bought a westie for $600…he had a jaw problem and vet bills totaled $3000 in 2 weeks.
He’s fine now, btw.

Also bought a 46” flat screen….for myself!

basp's avatar

husband bought me a very exspensive ring (5 carats!) for our 30th wedding anniversary. It was really only our 29 anniversary, but after this many years ofbeing married, I know when to not point out his mistakes.

Judi's avatar

No regrets about investing in real estate. The power plate is supposed to make you use your core muscles on a micro level decreasing the amount of time it takes to achieve the same results. Ask me in a month and I’ll let you know if I regret the investment. I bought the my5 so I didn’t spent the 10k I could have spent!

scamp's avatar

@Judi , WOW! That’s one hell of a vibrator!! I want to get one of those. How long have you had it? Does it really work?

Judi's avatar

It arrives next week. I have been told by people who should know that it DOES really work.

Nimis's avatar

Shad: My prized possession is my manual camera. I love it to bits.
I think the time it takes to save up for this stuff helps to weed out things you’ll regret later.
Iwam: Crazy…people should rethink how lightly the use the term library ‘til they see your stash.
Dead: Awww…am glad to hear it. (Your dog, not the bill.)
Basp: Hahaha…wise woman.
Judi: How utterly fascinating. Please update us later!

tinyfaery's avatar

Vibrator? Oh. Not that kind of vibrator.

Randy's avatar

@Nimis, Sad. =( I still want to find a cherry one somewhere. They are the best looking guitars in my opinion.

Edit: And of course, I dig the sound. Haha, it would be silly to buy a guiter like that just for it’s look.

Nimis's avatar

Rand: =( What about Ebay?

Randy's avatar

I’ve only seen a black one and that was only one. Don’t worry though, I will have one.

Nimis's avatar

Pete: Why exactly? Did the brick happen to erm…fly through something expensive?
Or are we talking about bullion here?

tinyfaery's avatar

I get it.

Harp's avatar

Braces. $5000 per kid. Twice.

No regrets. compared to college tuitions, it seems like a bargain

Nimis's avatar

Pete thepothead: Oooh. I’m a little slow.

Harp: Whoa! I don’t think I would be able to afford a third kid at that price!
Though I do imagine them to be a good social investment…
Braces. Not kids per se.

All: Did most of you guys have braces? Was it worth the investment?
Did you ever thank your parents? Or kind of just took it for granted?

jca's avatar

i’ve been on trips that i’ve spent thousands of dollars on, but as far as an item, i’d say my bed. i have jewelry that’s worth more than the bed, but i bought the jewelry on sale, so it was cheaper.

augustlan's avatar

I had braces, it was sort of worth it (my teeth are better, but by no means great). All 3 of my kids have/will have to have braces…2 are in them now, 3rd will be soon!

shadling21's avatar

My braces didn’t work 100%, so I could care less about whether I had them. Fortunately, I live in Canada, so it was pretty affordable.

flameboi's avatar

@Comedian
I like the helmet! Go for it!
@Harp
Why tuition is so expensive!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I still wonder that every time I pay for my semester
@Iwamoto
That’s a nice collection of videogames

KatawaGrey's avatar

@nimis: I probably won’t wear it again because there aren’t really many occasions for a prom dress aside from prom or some other formal occasion. I’ve been thinking about how i could get a bunch of my friends to wear their old prom dresses while we go out and do something absolutely mundane like go to the movies. I think it would be great to see people’s reactions to a bunch of college kids in formal wear. :)

Nimis's avatar

Jca: I’ve always thought investing in a good bed to be a sound investment.
Heck, (ideally) we spent a third of it sleeping. Makes the most sense, no?
Aug: I am actually glad to hear they are just better and not great.
I take great as being perfect. And really, perfectly-straight teeth weird me out!
It looks unnatural!
Shad: Do you think universal healthcare brings down the quality of the healthcare?
Kata: I’ve heard of people doing that with their bridesmaid dresses. I love that idea.

Sloane2024's avatar

As frequently as I can; whenever I wear anything remotely the same color pink I don the jewelry. I can’t help but love showing the pieces off. :)
