Do you like today’s music videos?

One of my pet peeves is when music videos create fictional narratives that have nothing to do with the actual lyrics of the song. For example, “The Reason” by Hoobastank.

I love older music videos because the trend back then seemed to add an atmosphere or vibe to the song, not an entirely new story.

I totally agree with you. I looked for a Taylor Swift video recently to see what the song meant and it had nothing to do with the song.
It doesn’t add much to the music. And not my cup of tea. But also can’t fault them for it either.
Just kind of feels like a bunch of high school kids made it big (more power to them) and sat around drinking beers thinking about what would be cool for a music video.
Money heist and we get the girl. Yeah! [beer smash]
Also, my expectations for Hoobastank are pretty low. :P
I love Gunship’s videos. When You Grow Up Your Heart Dies is 10/10. They had fans recreate scenes from 80’s movies and then cut it together. It’s brilliant and so much fun.
I’m not so concerned with the video being some literal music-theatre recreation of the lyrics so much as fitting the tone and being entertaining.
@gorillapaws Man, I love that. Makes me want to go recreate scenes from movies now.
When I was little, I was obsessed with the video for Take On Me. It was the first time seeing live action mixed with animation. And it kind of blew my mind. Haha
I do not usually watch music videos, especially not modern ones, because modern music sucks fucking ass.
I like this one though
Just realized that I was the same age that my youngest kid is now. Pretty sure that she would be very much unimpressed by that music video. Haha
@raum I like that video too, the whole Speed Racer vibe is great.
I have never been that big a fan of music videos, even when MTV started. Sitting around watching music vids seemed pretty much a pointless waste of time. All those early ones (Come on Eileen , Into the Great Wide Open ) got old pretty fast.
People didn’t dance to the music when the TV was on.
Yea they’re amazing cinematography wise but can be all over the place.
“Modern music sucks fucking ass.”
How much have you listened to? Because it always seems that the people who say that barely listen to new music. Or bother to seek it out
I liked a lot of Michael Jackson’s videos, and Addicted to Love. In fact, a lot of the older ones, but tbh I never watch music videos anymore. Maybe because, like you said, they seem meaningless and inane.
I have never liked music videos. Is the video is meant to distract from the poor quality of the music or does the music excuse a shoddy video. Either way the music and the video rarely go well together and the project is usually not an artistic success.
Not exactly music videos from the MTV era. But I’ve gone down a rabbit hole watching videos on YouTube of musicians that use looping.
Being able to see how they are crafting the song definitely adds to the experience of their music. :)
