What do you think of this homework app?

Asked by Mimishu1995 (23800points) July 19th, 2022

There is a popular app in my country that has been advertised for quite a while now. Basically it is like some kind of search engine for assignments. Students would take a photo of the part of their work that they have problems with, then the app would use image search to find similar threads of the app that have the same questions asked and answered by a teacher. If there is no result, the student can post a question on the app and a teacher will come and give the answer. So far the app is for math, but I think they are thinking of expanding their territory in the future.

Personally I don’t like this app as much as I should. On one hand I can see what the app is trying to do, and it can be a great resource for self-study. But on the other hand, the app can be abused really fast, just like how we sometimes have kids who ask homework questions on here. But unlike Fluther where we can tell someone isn’t putting any effort and tell them to work accordingly, this app is made for answering homework.

On apps like this, I wonder who else besides the student and the teacher is seeing the messages – is the government looking over your shoulder?

Are companies and corporations recordign every interaction? And why?

I just don’t trust apps to treat your data as confidential.

The best way to evaluate the worth of the app is to see how those that use it learn and can demonstrate their learning on a test.

My mathbooks, especially in higher levels of math, usually had answers in the back. But the answer did not explain how to solve the problem. That still had to be figured out by the student.

Are you saying that the app does the student’s homework?

@LostInParadise that’s the impression I got from them. They don’t explicitly say it in their ads. They say things like “help you with your learning” and “you aren’t alone in your studying journey”. But from the ads and demonstration videos I just can’t help but feel like they can be used for homework.

@zenvelo I wish there was a way for me to measure that. I’m too old to be connected to the student’s world anymore, and I’m not sure how popular the app is with students in this generation.
