Does your state, province, or country ban the sale of cosmetics tested on non-human animals?

Asked by Brian1946 (32592points) July 23rd, 2022

Only 9 states have banned their sale.

There are now 42 countries that limit or ban them:

“42 countries have passed laws to limit or ban cosmetics animal testing, including every country in the European Union, Australia, Colombia, Guatemala, Iceland, India, Israel, Mexico, New Zealand, Norway, South Korea, Switzerland, Taiwan, Turkey, the United Kingdom and several states in Brazil.”

If you live in a place that hasn’t, do you check to ensure that they’re cruelty-free?

TBH, I haven’t checked lately, but I remember seeing labels on my skin care products stating that they weren’t tested on animals.

Not that I am aware of.

So the theory behind this is:

It’s better to test on humans and potentially injure humans (the pinnacle of the animal kingdom) instead of testing on lower, less sentient animals. Do I have that correct?

Seems ass backwards to me.

Here’s an idea: why not test cosmetics on women in the US? They don’t have autonomy over their own bodies (thanks, Supreme Court) – so they would be good test subjects that no one cares about.

We test other stuff- medicines, vaccines, etc., on animals – why the departure here? PETA is more effective than I thought.

When I buy soaps and shampoos and other skin products, it makes zero difference to me how they were tested. Do they work? That’s the key.

Humans are the ones making, profiting, and voluntarily wearing these potentially toxic concoctions.

None of the above apply to any non-human subjects that I know of.

Being at the taxonomic “top” doesn’t entitle those with superior technology, to inflict pain and suffering on those who aren’t.

There are companies that don’t test on animals. I’ve been using their products for over 40 years, without any negative effects.

If Cruelty Cosmetics can’t or won’t learn from said companies, they can test it on themselves.

I check labels for the Bunny symbol/icon and also “not tested on animals” and/or “cruelty free”.
One of my bigger complaints about animal testing is different companies doing the same tests day after day, year after year rather than saying, “Ok, we know this is safe, no need for any company to test it again.”

Many of the tests are inhumane – excrutiatingly painful with no escape from the pain and/or deadly and disease-causing. Recently, 30 beagles were freed from a pesticide testing lab in Michigan and got to feel grass under their feet for the first time ever. An undercover video showed a dog being force-fed pesticides, and others trembling in cages. Can you imagine living like that hour after hour, day after day, year after year until you’ve outgrown your use and are put to death? Never to see nature or breathe fresh air? 4,000 beagles were rescued from a breeding facility in Virginia after various violations forced the facility to close.

Being at the taxonomic “top” doesn’t entitle those with superior technology, to inflict pain and suffering on those who aren’t.

Absolutely correct, in fact, quite the opposite. Humans have a responsibility NOT to inflict pain and suffering on those who can’t defend themselves against our superior knowledge and abilities!

It is a totally unheard of concept here, and I don’t see anything that is called “cruelty free” on our labels.

And a bit off-topic, but what do the “cruelty free” companies have as alternatives for testing on animals? Don’t get me wrong, I’m aware of how cruel tests can get and I don’t approve of cruelty on animals, but what method do they have to replace the testing?

Yes, we do, and when I washed my bunny with shampoo it burned his eyes. They should test that stuff!
