Well… the word comes from a 60’s film who George Harrison of Beatles fame wrote the soundtrack for. It’s about a guy who makes holes in the wall of his flat to spy on his neighbour who is a model for a photographer. She overdoses and he goes to save her.

Noel has described it as an imaginary friend who comes and saves you from your problems which sort of links to the themes of the film.

Wonderwall(song) describes “an imaginary friend who’s gonna come and save you from yourself”.

@LadyMarissa Yeah, I saw that but I thought it was dumb so I was hoping for another definition.

In the George Harrison film from which the term comes, the main character is obsessed with a woman he can see through a hole in their shared wall. In a literal sense, that wall is the wonderwall. But metaphorically, the wonderwall is the object of fascination itself (usually a person). This is the sense in which the term is used in the Oasis song. Yes, the song is about an imaginary friend coming to save him. But the constant thinking about that imaginary friend is what makes them his wonderwall.

So if you wanted a definition, I would say that a wonderwall is a person that one cannot stop thinking about (and by extension, any object of intense fascination or infatuation).

@JeSuisRickSpringfield Sounds like a “crush,” no?

@Zaku I wasn’t aware of the song or the term but it sounds like it focuses more on the idea of the imaginary friend being a savior which a crush is not necessarily.

I just looked up the movie and see that it is available for free on Roku channel: Shout Factory.
On the main Roku search page do a search for Wonderwall and it will pop up. You can also see it on Prime for $3.99 – (but it’s not worth it).
They needed a stronger editor. I had to fast forward through about 80% of the movie.

@Zaku It could be a crush, but it doesn’t have to be. In the Oasis song, for example, the narrator doesn’t have a crush on the imaginary friend.

@LuckyGuy yeah. Its a bit of a “mood” piece isn’t it…
