What would you do if you had about 600 million dollars?

Asked by jca2 (16892points) July 30th, 2022

The Mega Millions jackpot for July 29, 2022 was over 1.2 billion dollars. Let’s say, rounding off, the government took half in taxes. I know “half” is not accurate but this is hypothetical, so let’s say half gone in taxes. If you won the jackpot, and therefore had half for yourself, so let’s say 600 million, what would you do with it?

Personally, I think for an average person in an average dwelling to have that much money, you’d be a target and I don’t think I would want that much. Life would change and not necessarily in a good way. I would like a jackpot but not that much. I’d love to be able to take care of friends and family and donate to some animal welfare organizations.

I didn’t play, because I was going to buy a ticket or two and then forgot.

What about you? If you won all that money, what would your plan be?

I would start my own science foundation, university and cable channel. I would buy all the books on my Amazon wish list and read at my leisure and eat what ever I want and sleep when ever I please.

I would hire a guru to teach me to master my time travel so I could go and undo the wrongs that I caused to others.

I would write books for fun.

I’d start by helping my kids. I’d buy them each a house to get them started in life. After that I’d likely buy myself a place in the country away from people…get off the grid. Beyond that? I dunno. I don’t currently have a lot of bills, I don’t have a car payment or a house payment. I might pay the next 20 years worth of taxes on my home. Maybe I’d help fund many established efforts at helping the homeless.

OMG, that would help out a lot of my family and friends. I think I’d try to help the homeless because I can’t think of anything worse than being out on the street for much of your life.

I’d buy Flooder, and hire Ben to jazz it up to @JLoon’s spec’s! :D

I’d help all the animal shelters.

Move to a country that doesn’t tax lottery winnings?

Immediately convert it to ££££‘s, then consider my options.

I’m sure I’d do a lot of philanthropic stuff for society, friends and family, but the selfish purchases (which is the fun part of the question) I’d build a really cool workshop with high-end tools like this thing, a 3d metal printer, CNC machine, awesome woodworking tools, for making whatever I could dream up. I’d hire a full-time engineer/machinist, and an electrical engineer/robotics expert and have fun building crazy contraptions.

I would give every person in the US $1 million each and still have an absurd amount of money left over.

Lightlyseared's avatar

@Hawaii_Jake mot entirely convinced by the maths there :)

RayaHope's avatar

@Lightlyseared the maths works out great! Every American could get 1 million dollars and he would still have over 200 million :)

No idea. I’ll think about it when I start gambling.

the US population is 329 million so it works out.

I would take care of myself and my family. I bought 2 tickets just to say I played.

I’d think about it for a while.

Some ideas include:

* Handouts for many people I know and like whose lives would be improved by not needing to worry much about money.

* Since money begets money in our terrible system, figure out a foundation or other way to have the bulk of the money continue to generate more money. Ideally some pro-bono projects that could also generate income, but need a bunch of money to kickstart them.

* Handouts to the charitable organizations I think do the most good for the causes I care about most. Mainly, environmental and animal welfare (I was very happily surprised to see you list that too).

* I’d choose to set myself up to be able to travel a lot, and to live comfortably in various places, and getting citizenship in other nations.

* I’d have at least a small staff to help me handle affairs and avoid press, solicitations, or troublemakers.

* I’d hire a software developer to learn to replace me in doing most of my non-game work.

* I’d hire software developers and artists to help me doing the parts of my game work that I don’t want to do myself, and to collaborate with me.

* I’d think of other pro-bono projects to support, or to start myself. Things that I think ought to be done but that could really benefit from more attention/funding.

I’d go philanthropist. After seeing to family and friends of course. I could never spend that much in lifetime anyway. There ya go pal, buy a car on me. And get a little something for the wife.

I would definitely set up some sort of foundation to help people, but first I would buy some land for my husband and me, and buy my sister a house. I’d want to buy my inlaws a new house or condo also and pay for all of their basic expenses including food.

I’d also have some sort of party with my friends.

I would try to keep the winnings a secret. From what I understand, in some states it’s public record who won, and other states it’s private.

Save some, give some to charities, spend some, invest some for the future.

@RedDeerGuy1 – you should see if you can find a guru to help you on spec. After all, if you mastered your time travel you could have won this thing already, and you can pay them tomorrow.

I’d give my family enough money to change their names and live a happy life while I leveraged everything I had into fucking up US politics as hard as possible,
