Were apple jacks named after the alcoholic drink named applejack?

Asked by AsksQuestions (120points) August 19th, 2022

It seems unusual a children’s cereal would get named after an alcoholic beverage. Maybe they liked applejack and in the time it was named, it didn’t seem like an offense to name a children’s cereal after an unhealthy adult drink.

Here you go for history – A is for Apple – J is for Jacks.
Apple Jacks Cereal was invented by a man named William Thilly. He first was hired as a research assistant by Kellogg’s and eventually was given the opportunity to make his own product. William Thilly grew up on an apple farm and that helped inspire him to use apple as a primary ingredient for cereal and experiment until he found got the cereal just right. He called his invention “Apple O’s” before the cereal was renamed to Apple Jacks later on.

They were named “Apple O’s” in the mid 60s. The cereal was shaped like an “O”. Then in the early 70s they added the green color & those were shaped like an “X”. That’s when they were doing a rebranding & they changed the name to “Apple Jax”. In the early 90s, the name was once again changed. This time to “Apple Jacks”.
Nothing that I’ve read indicates they were named after an alcoholic drink!!!

I don’t know where the notion that they were called “Apple Jax” in the 1970s-80s came from, or whether it was ever true in this world somewhere, but it wasn’t spelled that way where I was.

It was APPLE JACKS, as this link shows.

So far, I think that might just be a typo in the wiki article. The articles it cites do not mention “Jax” anywhere.

Does anyone here ever remember seeing Apple Jax spelled that way, rather than Jacks?

(I went ahead and edited the wiki page. If anyone knows of a solid source for that spelling, let me know, please.)

I don’t give a rat’s ass about the “x”, so ENJOY being right!!!
