Have you ever been so overwhelmed by something that you wanted to lock yourself in a room and never come out?

Asked by RayaHope (7448points) August 19th, 2022

What did you do to break free of that feeling? I need some inspiration and would like to believe that this too will pass.

No. Onward the fog, keep on truckin’.

Yes. Ever since junior high.

@RedDeerGuy1 May I ask how long ago that was?

@RayaHope In 1989–1992. 30 years ago. Antidepressants help a little, but I prefer to sleep, live and play indoors. Online shopping and Fluthering, are where I get my adventures. I spend my free time nerco-posting Fluther posts, sprinkling Lurve, and organizing and adding to my Amazon books wish lists.

I outgrew it once I left home.

@RedDeerGuy1 That is fantastic since it helps you and you like doing that! :)

I used to have times when I’d get so tired and dragged out I’d go in to a hermit mode for a few days. Not depressed or anything just plain tired. But freinds wouldn’t leave me alone, even when I tried to dismiss them being a smart ass. The phone would ring, i’d be told, Oh I’m sorry, did I wake you up? No I was asleep anyway. Or a knock on the door, and it’s Oh, thought maybe you needed and friend? No, I got all the assholes I need. I don’t know why people even put up with me lol. But hell when you’re tired you’re tired.

Yes. I cry, get angry, plot revenge, laugh at my situation, watch a sad movie or a funny movie and then I eat something sweet and go to bed and by the next morning I would’ve worked out all the feelings and say to myself, well shit happens and it happens to everyone and then part of my revenge is to make myself look fabulous and unscathed as possible and enjoy my day. F, everyone else. Today is my day.

Oh ya, happens to me with anger, sadness, and embarrassment. The odd thing is that I don’t want to stay in there when I’m sick.

Er, well yes. I ran and locked myself in the bathroom. After some time in there, I came out. I did that a few times when I was a kid, though it was also mainly to escape my parents, who were chasing me for being too annoying.

I wouldn’t say I never wanted to come out, but yeah, I’ve had times I just want to stay in my room, alone, in my sadness, and not go anywhere. I usually wallow in it for a few days, and then come out into my more normal routine.

When I was younger depression lasted longer. It’s been studied that young people feel emotional pain and discomfort more intensely. I think it’s true on average.

The older you get the more you see the patterns in life and that things go up and down. Most situations are temporary. Plus, you usually get better at compartmentalizing.

I use a Buddhist meditation technique to concentrate on my breath and gradually empty my mind of all external thoughts. Then I have 4 or 5 tequilla shots and dance with strangers.

It takes practice but it’s worth it.

I had the opposite happen to me:

The narcs busted my ass for being in the presence of Mary Jane, so the fuzz locked me in a room that I didn’t want to enter.

Luckily I only had to stay there for a day.

@JLoon ” I have 4 or 5 tequila shots and dance with strangers” oh that sounds really risky. I’d be afraid to try that.

JLeslie's avatar

Lol. Fuzz is police. You don’t hear that term much anymore.

RayaHope's avatar

Oh his comment makes more sense now. thanks @JLeslie lol

mazingerz88's avatar

I think songs, books and movies help me get out of that “room” so to speak.

RayaHope's avatar

@mazingerz88 Those things do help me feel better or at least avoid it for a while, but the thing(s) that overwhelmed me is still there.

janbb's avatar

Maybe if you talked to us about what it is that is overwhelming you, you might get some help?

jca2's avatar

Sometimes there are icky things that happen and it makes me want to avoid people but usually, these things work themselves out. As @JLeslie said, you tend to see that life has its ups and downs. Another way of putting it, for me, is “shit happens, sometimes life is not fair, life can be disappointing.” Also, there have been things that have happened in the past, in my interactions with friends, which were distressing at the time but now it’s like we’ve moved on and those things seem so trivial.

@RayaHope – Inner peace has it’s dangers.

@RedDeerGuy1 Even today you taught me something. I had not heard the term necroposting. Now I know about it. Thanks!

Nope. Never.

RayaHope's avatar

^^ I envy you, sure wish I could say that :(

I’ve hidden under my blanket and wished really hard that the world would either go away or hit pause.

Does that count?

RayaHope's avatar

@raum I wish the same thing at times.
