Are there asymptomatic cases of polio in NYC or more like just undiagnosed?

What are the estimates of how many people are actually infected?
What I heard and read was they are finding polio in waste water, but only the one case is diagnosed so far.
Also, is waste water regularly tested for polio? Do we know we haven’t had any cases from regular testing of waste water? Or, it’s usually just based on no one being diagnosed by a doctor?

No one knows. It’s too soon. Even in the earlier (1920s-1930s) polio outbreaks, it took a couple weeks for polio symptoms to appear – sometimes longer.
Definitely. It is clearly spreading in New York state; we finally have a case of childhood polio paralysis again. Evidence shows a vaccine strain Polio is propagating, especially in a certain area that has been in the news for this bullshit before.
Polio is asymptomatic in most people, but they can still spread it. There will be hundreds of thousands of infections before people start being as scared as they should be.
@Smashley Oh, it’s from a live virus vaccine the current case? That person was vaccinated, or caught it from someone vaccinated?
Live virus vaccines are often used for polio in the developing world because they keep well and can be administered in sugar cubes, highly increasing the effectiveness of public health efforts to prevent outbreaks. However, live virus strains can cause the disease, which usually doesn’t get far because of the wide use of effective vaccines. It appears that the Rockland County outbreak is a vaccine strain that hopped into a vulnerable population.
Yeah, in the US we stopped using live virus years ago. I think it’s much cheaper to produce the live virus vaccine and maybe it’s still the sweet drops? Easy to administer.
Oh shit. The internet is again going to kill us by the millions.
During the whole anti-vax hysteria a couple of years ago many many anti-backers were telling the story of people getting sick from the polio vaccine in Africa and Bill Gates is making people sick, most Democrats went ballistic saying that people can’t get sick from a vaccine.
When I would say well, yes, it happens with live polio vaccine, but rarely, and I knew about it as a child. I’d add America doesn’t use the live virus anymore. Many Democrats in the room (whatever room I was in) told me I’m wrong or thought I was a Trumper.
Now, we have polio cases in America from the vaccine. How will Democrats who couldn’t listen to that information deal with that? Ignore it I guess.
Oops.
@HP Not sure what you mean.
@JLeslie USA stopped using that type of vaccination over 20 years ago, they most likely got it from someone i from (maybe Europe or Israel) that had that type of vaccination.
No oops except if you don’t understand the different vaccinations for Polio !!
Democrats didn’t do this !

The problem isn’t live virus vaccines causing the occasional case. The problem is populations who aren’t vaccinated. That this problem exists in a country thought to have good education and public health systems, is the problem.
@Tropical_Willie I know we stopped using it here. I said it all over fluther the last couple of years. I just said it above.
The oops is obstinate Democrats!! This is my constant complaint. They say “impossible” and Republicans are right that it is possible, and it drives me crazy. So then what? Democrats are stupid, ignorant, liars, because they want to believe vaccines are safe and it’s science? Vaccines are overall safe, but not being able to hear that yes there have been some cases of vaccine virus illness in Africa is just as blind as the anti-vax people. People aren’t going to trust if they feel lied to or if they feel the person talking is uninformed.
Bill Gates has a goal to eliminate polio from the planet. It’s a fantastic goal and effort, and I fully support it. In parts Africa they use the live vaccine. I’d be surprised if Western Europe does, maybe some countries do, probably parts of Eastern.
@Smashley Overall, that’s correct, that’s the biggest problem. Great point.
OOPS
“Now, we have polio cases in America from the vaccine. How will Democrats who couldn’t listen to that information deal with that? Ignore it I guess.”
Which means WHAT ?? ^^^^^
^^Status quo. It’s part of our problem in America regarding politics. We talk past each other, want to hate each other. Afraid to say anything that might sound like it’s supporting the other side so we can’t agree on anything.
@JLeslie I mean the misinformation and bullshit about this will once again be off the charts and the resulting casualties will spiral.
The problem is backwards anti-vaxxers in NY that are Orthodox Jews lead by stupid people.
@Tropical_Willie I’ve said that all along. The ultra-orthodox are practically as bad as the Christian Nationalists in listening to extremist views and just following along with whatever their leaders say.
That was a problem during covid that the ultra-orthodox were still having big weddings and they get afraid of “government control” etc.
I said right above your last answer that I agree the biggest problem is the unvaccinated.
You seem to not be reading that I’m in favor of vaccinating the world for polio. Not getting a vaccination for polio makes absolutely no sense to me, except for very specific medical concerns that are contraindicated for taking the shot.
I’m saying it’s ok to know a tiny tiny percentage of people might get polio from the live vaccine and you can still be in favor of vaccinating everyone. You might understand that, but most Democrats didn’t seem to.
You’re doing it now, attacking me like I don’t agree with vaccination. You could just agree it’s a small risk, there are ways to guard against the virus spreading, but the biggest problem is the unvaccinated. I completely agree with that and really there’s nothing to fight about. Plus, there are ways to prevent illness using the live vaccine by keeping the unvaccinated away from the newly vaccinated.
