What are your favorite songs from various decades?

Asked by gorillapaws (30859points) September 4th, 2022

Please share some of your favorite songs/performances by decade. Try to limit them to one song per artist, and no more than 5 songs per decade. The goal is to share what we found to be great about music from each slice in time.

From the 1970’s would have to be Hotel California by the Eagles .
From the 1980’s would have to be money for nothing by Dire Straites.

I both love and hate this question. Really fun reading people’s answers. But having to narrow it down to five songs per decade is brutal.

@Raum “But having to narrow it down to five songs per decade is brutal.”

I struggled with it too. Don’t feel obligated to pick the best 5 from each decade. Focus on stuff that clicked for you and highlights an aspect of the sound from that era you wanted to showcase.

Loving all of the GA’s so far. Keep ‘em coming!

Whoops- I overlooked that part.
Luckily my selections average out to 4 per decade.

Wow! Love this song!

@WhyNow Sadly, it’s more relevant today than since the end of the USSR. Nations playing chicken with nukes is a reckless game with no winners.

I have been trying to focus on stuff that I personally like. Problem is that I like too many different kinds of music. And way too many songs. :P

Will come back to this question!

gorillapaws's avatar

@raum To help narrow things down, skip the ones already mentioned, and maybe focus on songs that showcase different aspects of the sounds of that era you may have liked (especially if there are gaps from what’s already been listed): e.g. instead of 5 awesome psychedelic rock songs, do one of those, one funk, one folk, etc. so the listener could get a sense of the breadth of the style of music from that time. And if you still can’t decide, just flip a coin.
