Has Anyone here ever had a Pilonidal cyst?

Asked by serenityNOW (3643points) September 19th, 2008

I’m not going to explain here what it is, save to say that it hurst an obscene amount and I can’t get to the doctor until Monday. I am wondering, however if it can get big enough for it to break my tailbone? Sounds silly, but this thing is huge and getting bigger by the hour. Here’s some info: http://www.pilonidal.org/whatitis.htm

If you have enough money or good insurance, go to a hospital ER and get this taken care of, immediately.

You should not have to suffer for an entire weekend with this, and it sounds like you have a legitimate reason to go to the ER.

Yes, seriously. Get thee to a doctor.
I don’t think knowing if it can break your tailbone will help your situation.
I wonder why their usual position is slightly to the left side?

Did it stem from a sacral dimple?

If desperate, soak in a warm bath with epsom salts several times a day. I developed an an anal fistula (an infection w. a low fever) that required surgery. I wanted to delay for 6 weeks so my children could finish school. The doctor gave me the sitz bath advice. But yours sounds more gruesome.

But I suggest an ER now rather than the Doctor’s on Monday.

Jon. As a doctor, I suggest you go see a doctor sooner rather than later. There is a very high probability that you have an abscess, likely caused by a resistant bacteria known as MRSA (for Methicillin Resistant Staph Aureus). Rates of MRSA infections in the community are around 50%, and those infections are notoriously difficult to treat (and potentially dangerous). What will probably happen is that the doctor or nurse will open the abscess with a procedure known as Incision and Drainage, then pack the wound, and provide oral antibiotics. In the meantime, I agree with Gail. Warm compresses or soaks in the bath will help alleviate the pain and might cause the cyst/abscess to open up and drain on its own. Hope you feel better.

Oh, and to answer your question, it cannot break your tailbone, but, it can become a more severe infection. Go as soon as is feasible to the doctor. If you don’t feel up for an ER visit, then find an urgent care center tomorrow morning and go.

Thank you all, so much! I’ve got to go to work now, and will mull over the situation for the next couple of hours. Think I’ll call my folks, too. It is so uncomfortable. Thanks again…. J
