Can I hurt my feet from having tight blankets?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) September 20th, 2022

My feet feel like they are being strangled in my blankets. Is it ok or should I have more room, or have them uncovered?

They hurt when under tight blankets and are cold when they are free of the blankets.

Do you have the same problems?

You may have a circulation problem. Have your heart and legs checked by your doctor. Or diabetes :(

Full disclosure: On cold nights I take a hot water bottle to bed with me to keep my feet warm. I also recommend a duvet rather than blankets.

I’m tall, so if blankets are tucked in, my feet won’t like that . . . so, I push through them with my feet, so my feet can do what they want, such as dangling off the end of the bed. And yeah, I also usually use a duvet (but still the feet are often roaming out).

If I didn’t do that, I’d probably have a hard time sleeping, and yes, hurt or at least annoy my feet.

Fortunately, unlike you, my feet don’t feel cold. But then, I live much further south than you do, and my themostat tends to heat up the house before my feet would get cold.

Have you tried un-tucking the covers, but still having your feet under them? Or, wearing socks or warm slippers while you sleep? Or pajamas with feet?

@RayaHope I just received the results from my heart test a week ago. My heart is fine. I will ask my Dr in the first week of October about my legs. Thanks.

@Zaku Yes. They get too hot under the comforter and too cold over. Nothing works.

What I do now is keep my socks on until my feet get hot then take them off.

Sounds good. Maybe shop for thinner socks. Or sacrifice some socks to the cause, and slowly add little holes to them until you don’t need to take them off.

My local hospital uses the footie socks that just cover the lower part of the foot leaving the ankle exposed. They say that keeps your feet warmer but NOT hot & the ankles don’t get uncomfortably cold…PLUS, there’s NO chance of cutting off the circulation which some people tend to do with tight socks. Might be worth a try. IF it doesn’t work, you won’t be out of much money!!!

I keep a thick towel, rolled up and secured with rubber bands, at the foot of my bed (inside). It raises the covers enough to lower the pressure on my feet. It’s one of the best things I’ve ever done for my troubled feet.

Sounds uncomfortable. You could sleep like we do here in the old country – nothing gets tucked in, blankets are lightweight and don’t extend over the edge of the mattress.

Wear fluffy socks.
I agree circulation may be the problem due to socks that cut it off.
Depending on the time of year like now its more cooler as close to Fall/Winter months now.
It depends if this is something new or ongoing over a time period?

The sheets and comforter are never tucked in.
They end up on the floor every night.

There are “blanket lifter” or “foot tent” devices that can help.
