Why did all 16 GOP members of Florida’s Congressional team vote against Hurricane Ian relief?

Asked by chyna (51566points) October 1st, 2022 from iPhone

Is there a reason that I’m not seeing? Are any of them up for re-election in the mid terms?
If there is no reasonable reason for voting this down, I hope all Florida voters let these people know they won’t be jerked around any longer.

That does sound really dumb of them. Wow, did they miss the news or something? I hope you are right and they end up looking for other jobs. Unbelievable…

I hadn’t heard that one. Maybe it’s because DeSantis had voted against relief for Sandy years ago. Maybe it’s because they knew that the money was on its way & their vote would change NOTHING!!! I’ll be keeping my eyes open for a better answer!!!

They don’t want Biden to look like a hero !!

They would rather kill their voters ! That’s important to GOP congressional members!

Looking into it, they voted against it because it wasn’t just a bill for Hurricane Ian relief. It was tied to a bill to continue funding the government that was full of other, non-emergency items that we don’t need.

All bills are written to have more items that are supported by the politicians writing the bill.
It would seem to me that the politicians could over look the portions they didn’t like and vote for the greater good of their constituents.

@chyna Maybe they did vote for the greater good of their constituents. Inflation is huge right now. The “stop-gap” bill that is needed to keep the government running included several Democrat pet projects along with $12B to send to Ukraine. The amount that was being asked to give to FEMA was $15M. Now, I may just be a simple fella that asks too many questions, but if it is indeed a necessary spending bill to keep the government afloat, why does it have to go for pet projects and spending to other countries? That will only add to the inflation which will hurt all citizens of this country. Why are we spending almost 1000x as much on Ukraine as we are on our citizens? If they want to add money to our folks, why ask for more? Why not just take it from Ukraine? We have, after all, led the world in sending aid to Ukraine. If we have to keep some for ourselves, why is that a bad thing? Besides, we could pull MORE than $15M out of that pot of money and it would help the constituents even more.

You might even want to question your own ready acceptance that all bills have more items than needed. Especially for a bill that says that our government is about to run out of funding for operation. That seems to be the problem…zero fiscal responsibility by politicians.

On the CBS news, this morning, (Sunday 10/2/22), they said Biden promised 40k to people toward rebuilding their homes. OK, so 40k for people who live in beautiful areas like Sanibel Island, a vacation destination, a resort area, but these same people were crying like babies at the idea of giving 10k to a kid for their college education. I see a bit of hypocrisy.

Kamala says that communities of color will get the first help. Talk about politicizing a crisis! Not to mention blatantly blasting your racism out to the universe!

LadyMarissa's avatar

The people of Sanibel Island don’t want nor need $40K. They ALL have the best insurance to get them back on their feet!!! PLUS, it’s their 2nd home & they have another warm & cozy home to live in until the repairs are finished. They’ll spend their obligatory 2 weeks there next summer.

The communities of color do good to pay their mortgage & their insurance covers very little of the repairs to their home. They NEED the $40K to get going once again!!! How can Christian Nationalists be so greedy & blatantly racist at the same time???

seawulf575's avatar

@LadyMarissa So is it your opinion that all white people in Florida are rich and all blacks are poor?

JLeslie's avatar

I would think the 40k is for the uninsured.

@seawulf575 Many companies pay the spouse or other designated beneficiary of a deceased employee a year’s salary. That isn’t uncommon. My company would have done that prior to my retirement.

LadyMarissa's avatar

Go back & look at EVERY bill proposed this year from BOTH sides, they ALL have BS items in them.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@LadyMarissa Absolutely. Any time something obvious is voted down, read the bill. The answer is always there.

It’s not a good look to block aid to people in a disaster zone.

Has the term “ID 10 T” mean anything?
