Can an eye doctor treat and diagnose orthostatic hypotension? (NSFW)

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24947points) October 3rd, 2022

Orthostatic hypotension also called postural hypotension is a form of low blood pressure that happens when you stand up from sitting or lying down.

I have to reach for a wall, because I faint, and go blind when going to the bathroom from the bedroom. I really have to go so I can’t always sit up and let it pass.

Also, could I get a chamber pot? Or do they not do that anymore?

If you’re concerned about it, see your primary doctor.

@smudges Done that, was no help. My medication might be the cause and she would prefer me to stay on my meds. I am looking for different specialists to ask. I see the eye doctor sometime soon, and wondered if they can help with the blindness part?

An ophthalmologist would refer you to a specialist, most likely a cardiologist. An eye doctor is not qualified to treat your hypotension.

And an optometrist is not qualified to even make a referral.

You need to ask your primary care physician for a more in depth consultation/referral. This cannot have bothered you that much, you first asked about it years ago.

@zenvelo Thanks. I got the results from a heart scan last month and gave my heart a clean bill of health. I’ve had a M.R.I. that said I was fine too. I will bring it up again with my Dr. on October 20.

Seems more like a circulatory problem than an eye problem.

It could also be caused because you’re half-asleep, disoriented, it’s dark, and you’re in a hurry.

Always see a Doctor. Low blood pressure can be a very serious thing.
Losing consciousness, even for just a few seconds, is serious.
Keep a record of when it occurs, how long they lasted and what you were doing at the time. Tell your care provider if symptoms occur at times that could be dangerous, such as while driving.
