Have I been scammed?

Asked by Nomore_Tantrums (4456points) October 6th, 2022

My wife saw a turquoise bracelet she liked on Facebook so I ordered it for her. But it was supposed to be free, just pay shipping and handling. Thirteen bucks
for shipping and handling, does that sound fishy?

No, but I hope it’s a very pretty Howlite. Turquoise is fairly valuable when real and old in many cases.

Scratch the back and if it shows your scratch it’s Howlite.

@KNOWITALL Don’t tell me that, it might end up at a pawn shop. “I dunno, where was it last time you saw it?” ; )

@Nomore_Tantrums I’d expect a Texan to know the difference pardner!! Maybe go dig her up a nice one down at the creek. :)

Honestly, it depends. I know that’s not a satisfying answer, but depending on the shipping method and such, that could be real. It does sound high though. But if it’s a ‘scam’, $13 is a pretty weak haul.

They are more than likely mass produced. The shipping price is high by standard for this type item. It is all relative. We are talking about the price of a couple cups of coffee out. If she is happy, hurrah!

It sounds to me like a phishing expedition for your credit card. Maybe not but I just fell for one so I’m now suspicious.

@Nomore_Tantrums did you receive the bracelet? If so, was it nice?

I have never bought anything through Facebook. If I do any online buying, it’s from regular sties that I know in advance, like Lands End, Amazon, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, and it was jewelry, and I couldn’t find it on a legit site that I knew, I’d probably just go to a store and buy in person.

Not yet. I mean thirteen bucks isn’t a big deal but it’s the principle of the thing. Where was it shipped from, some other dimension? @jca2

@Nomore_Tantrums You gave your credit card info for the purchase, I assume. I suspect, as I mentioned above, that is what they were after.

I’m thinking you’re right. Fortunately it was just an HEB debit card, not connected to my bank account or regular credit cards, so easy enough to cancel. Never put much money on that any way. @janbb
