How does a car's shoulder strap seat belt know when to lock?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24892points) October 13th, 2022

In a car? For the shoulder strap?

Sometimes it clicks and sometimes it goes slack when deployed.

Is that a defect or is it supposed to be like that?

Have you noticed the issue?

I’m frustrated trying to put one on. Sometimes it locks and sometimes it goes slack.

It doesn’t know it…it’s purely mechanical.

If you pull quickly it locks up, like if you were thrown forward in a crash. If you pull gently it won’t lock up.

It is activated by high speed.
