If earth's gravity were to suddenly increase to like 2g, how long would it take for people to adapt to it?

Asked by Samantha4One (1331points) October 29th, 2022

Hello,

First of all I wanna say, for this question’s sake let’s keep all the laws of physics away.

Hypothetically speaking, if one day you wake up to find earth’s gravity to be double, how long you think It will take people to adapt to it and live normal life again? Assuming all other things(same atmosphere, same pressure etc.. no volcanic eruption or anything) to remain the same as now.

Regards!

There are scientists in the collective who will know more than me, I’m just guessing, but I think at 1 or 2g’s increase some people would never adapt well. Those who don’t tolerate it well might experience serious health issues. Some people will do ok.

If gravity doubled, probably everyone would die. Above 7g-force most people are getting very sick. At double earth’s gravity (I think earth is close to 10g) we would be passing out, having cardio-vascular issues, difficulty seeing if we don’t pass out. It would be very bad.

I think 2g would kill the planet. My guess is the trees would topple and then without the lungs of the planet we’d all suffocate of CO2 poisoning (and so would the other animals).

I’m just thinking about the Disney ride Mission to Mars that has 2.5g’s. I HATE it. My husband thinks it’s great.

If gravity doubled, your perceived weight would double. Imagine if you are already out of shape and suddenly have to move twice as much weight. I imagine that there would be a few humans that could adapt, but there are so many more that would likely not be able to get out of bed. Your body’s muscles have been trained all their life to handle the weight of your body. The mechanics of the movements would not have suddenly changed, but the amount the muscles and joints can readily handle would be woefully under developed.

I can picture billions of people dying because they were finding it hard to breathe or because they couldn’t move to get food or water. What a mess. The few that might survive would be those that were extremely health conscious and did a lot of weight training prior to the gravity change. They would struggle but might be able to survive.

None. We’d all die very fast.

I think a more interesting question would be, what forms of life might be able survive?

@seawulf575 That sounds right to me, but If you’re one of those world-strongest-man-types, I think you’d be screwed too. The current guy weighs 400 lbs, so even being extremely strong, it would be impossible to move around at 800 lbs. It would probably be the gymnasts and the elite swimmer type bodies that do the best (I could be wrong).

@gorillapaws Likely those that overdo the weight training would be challenged as well. But at least they have the benefit of having subjected their muscles and joints to the task of moving heavier loads.

The effects would to be mostly unpredictable but likely catastrophic. Some interesting known effects though. You may think flight would be out if the question but the atmosphere would also be denser keeping it possible. The moon would likely have orbital changes and the nature of it depends on if the gravity changed instantly or gradually, but it may just come crashing into us. Need to try that in universe sandbox. At 2X gravity most healthy people would actually adapt. Our muscles, bones and heart would strengthen and enlarge to meet the new demands. I don’t know how long but quicker than most would think.

Never. It took millions of years for evolution to allow us to live at 1G; it will take millions more to let humans adapt to 2G.

What is it now?

It would be like carrying another you on your back. You would never get used to it, you would have difficulty just walking to your car.

As others have said, we would all just die. I would think there would be massive earthquakes and volcano eruptions. Buildings will crumble from the intant weight. Hell if I put on 10 pounds my knees feel it right away. If I suddenly doubled my weight I wouldn’t be able to walk much less breathe. I may last a few minutes before my heart stops but that isn’t adjusting.

@Samantha4One Why? Do you know something we don’t?? sorry…humor attempt

I don’t understand what it would mean to increase gravity to 2g . . . without involving physics?

Well, in any case, I think we’d all die before we could even think much at all about the physics.

Not sure if they would adapt at all.
An essential aspect of training is rest.
To build/strengthen muscles means to damage them first, and then allow them to heal in between. If you increase gravity 2-fold you expose them to a constant increased load with no time to heal.
Another important thing to remember is that a 2x increase in gravity is not the same as doubling your weight through getting fat.
When you get fat, you just increase the amount of fat you carry around.
Your blood still weighs the same.
Your internal organs still weigh the same.
Your brain still weighs the same.
When you double gravity, all those double in weight as well, meaning your heart has to work twice as hard, all the time, just to pump blood to your brain and the rest of the body.
And who knows what would happen to your internal organs when they suddenly become twice as heavy. Will they crush themselves and stop working altogether?
