How long should you soak certain type of plants in water?

Asked by mazingerz88 (29220points) November 9th, 2022 from iPhone

To my very limited knowledge, there are plants that get watered by soaking them first in water for several minutes before taking them out to drain. How long can they be soaked without damaging them? Thank you.

I have never heard of soaking any houseplant in water. I am not an expert. I am simply a person with quite a few houseplants.

Never heard of that either. I’ve heard of watering from the bottom in a pot with holes in it.

Orchids get watered that way, several varieties get “rot” if you water from the top.

@Tropical_Willie Do you mean the way I described it – watering from the bottom or what @mazingerz88 is asking about, submerging the whole plant in water?

Soaking the pot only, Phalaenopsis are prone to “rot” !

Don’t get the base of the plant wet.

Some plants are best watered (soaked) and then not watered again for 5–7 days. It’s to avoid root rot, which is mentioned in answers above, but do you mean take the plant out of the soil? Like lemon trees can be prone to this if the soil doesn’t drain and dry quickly.

I think I might be dealing with it now. A friend took care of my plant for several weeks and I think she overwatered possibly, meaning watered too much and too often.

@JLeslie Yes, these two plant varieties I find myself watering these days seem to do well when I place them in their pots in a basin water-filled at pot level…for about 5 minutes. I’m curious
to know if they’ll be happier with more soaking time…or not.
