I duck below the level of the counter.

We do not have those here.

A friend has one. Nothing flies out of it.

Note: A friend who repairs them tells me they often get clogged and cause leaks. He said the problem is that they were never meant to put whole meals into, they were meant to grind up the little bits of food that might come off your plate. People put whole meals into them, and then there are problems with clogs, leaks and plumbing issues.

I don’t have one now, but before this house I used them all the time, nothing ever flew out of them, there were rubber flaps to prevent that.

Never had anything fly out of one

No, but I take precautions not to be holding a clean dish or anything above the drain when I switch on the garbage disposal. It gets gross down in the drain, and I don’t want little microscopic particles flying onto my just cleaned dish.

No. My disposer has plastric flaps that cover it.

My disposal has never spit stuff back at me. Maybe you should have a discussion with it and settle your differences.

If I’m concerned, I just pop a pot lid over it.

There are drain covers specifically made to prevent things from flying out – one has holes in it, is metal, and allows water to go through it. It should be in place in your sink hole at all times to prevent dropping silverware and food items from going into the drain, and definitely in place when running the garbage disposal. The other cover is flat with a handle, black, made of hard rubber and doesn’t have holes in it. It’s used mostly to cover the hole if you want to plug it so as to wash dishes or fill your sink with water.

No. I mean…what are you putting through the disposal that this is a concern? Even without the splatter guard, very minimal material would come back up at you, and whatever you’re carving up in there should be soft biodegradable waste. If you’re carving something up that’s going to damage your eye….you’re probably doing it wrong.

By habit I look away. Wary of housemates unintentionally dropping metal things in there like small spoons and forks. Hate hearing that terrible metal to metal grinding sound! Often I will just put my hand in there to check or flick the switch on and off quickly to sound check.

Put your hand in there? What??

I have used a garbage disposer, but it never crossed my mind to protect my eyes. I wear glasses which give come protection but food splattering upwards from the disposal unit was never an issue. Definitely a First World problem.

Between the running water, and the rubber flaps at the entry, eyewear isn’t required.

I’ve stuck my hand in countless garbage disposals for various reasons.

filmfann's avatar

@Dutchess_III So, are they countless because of missing fingers?
Is that ruining the joke?

Dutchess_III's avatar

Not when it’s running! If it’s malfunctioning in some way I’ll TURN IT OFF and stick my hand in to figure out why.

Yucky water sometimes splashes out. I try to keep maximal distance when I hit the switch.
