Good place to shop for a neat backpack or day bag in the Bay Area?

Asked by zina (1661points) September 20th, 2008

I’m looking for a good sturdy everyday bag that’s got to carry a lot of folders, books, and oddly-shaped items – but ideally looks at least somewhat interesting and maybe even “adult” (as a graduate student/professor I’d rather not use a school-kid backpack anymore!), or at least isn’t covered in a bunch of plastic and straps (hopefully you know what I’m talking about). Where should I look for this?

Thrift stores, markets, regular stores, sports stores, etc. Places that seem obvious to you, places one might not think of.

The best bags are those made by Timbuk2. Which is easy to do online anywhere in the world. Or you can go to any REI to pick one up.

REI is the place to go.

I like that Timbuk2 make-your-own thing, and the daypack is more in the right direction, but it’s all out of my price range, and not quite what I’m looking for. I guess I should emphasize more that even though I’m looking for sturdy, I’m trying to find something more simple, creative/artistic, and comfy, not so much the generic/mainstream/corporate looks (no offense intended!). Second-hand or handmade -type stuff, natural fibers or more old-fashioned designs, would be fine with me….. I just have no idea where to even look for it!

Ha. I think Timbuk2 might be mortified that their product has been described as generic/mainstream/corporate.

I kinda figured – it seems like a cool company, and different than others, and great for people looking for that kind of bag!

There’s a shop on Valencia Street in SF called Therapy. They used to have some good bags. Or maybe try Etsy.

cool! those look like good spots to check out – and therapy’s yelp page led me to www.skunkfunk.com, which also looks neat.

looks like i need to make a trip to the mission – while there i could also stop in thrifttown, community thrift, buffalo, etc in case they have bags… (haven’t noticed them before—- just purses but not bigger backpacks/day bags)

now that you got me looking online, i found http://www.hilsidebags.com/ and http://www.amymacsanfrancisco.com/ – both have super cute smaller bags…. there must be something like this for bigger bags! one site had “hip mom diaper bags” – now there’s an interesting way to find what i need!

You ought to find something in one of those spots. Have fun!
