What is the difference between mashup and collage?

Asked by yaujj48 (1189points) December 10th, 2022

After getting answered for the montage and supercut difference, I search a little bit and saw the terms collage and mashup. From what I gathered, they are mostly the same with collage mostly applied to art while mashup applied to music and video.

Just wonder is that all for their difference or is there something more than that?

Collage is a specific art term, meaning a piece formed primarily by images that adhered down to a substrate to form a new image. It can also contain different paint or drawing media, but the term refers mostly to the adhered images. Collages are usually considered a type of mixed media, but not all mixed media are collages (like squares and rectangles…).

You may also be interested in assemblage, which is sculptural equivalent of collage.
