Roll Call: If you live in Northern California, are you OK?

Asked by Tropical_Willie (31435points) December 20th, 2022

There was a 6.2 Earthquake off the coast of Ferndale, CA. I know there a few jellies in and around the Bay area.

Neither the people nor the dog in our house even woke up. We live in San Jose.

The Ferndale quake happened a long way away from the Bay Area (270 miles away), and was not felt here. It did however, trigger the “MyShake” app on my phone!

Also in San Jose, and we didn’t feel it. But thanks very much for asking.

Damage was pretty local to Humboldt County.

Although the last big quake up there @RocketGuy and I were backpacking on the Lost Coast Trail and we literally had to run to dodge rocks flying off the cliff.

At the same time, I was watching the ocean to make sure a tsunami hadn’t been generated. That would have smashed us against the rocks and washed us out to sea. The sand was moving in waves, like water, due to the quake’s pulse.

And then there was the time where we were trying to get to camp and we were about half an hour late. We had to cross about a mile section of beach that gets swallowed up in high tide. As I said we were late and we ended up running as the ocean came in around us.
