If you were exploring an abandoned house and found some expensive stuff, would you take it?

Asked by RayaHope (7448points) December 21st, 2022

I was watching a video and this guy was exploring this mansion and there was some really expensive stuff in there like brand tons of new Nike sneakers in their box and Louis Vuitton purse’s. Coins and bills even high end furniture (although that would be hard to carry, lol) I doubt that I would but I have to admit it would be tempting.

I would pick through the stuff and take whatever I fancied. There’s no name on any of the stuff. But it would depend on just what the stuff was and how long it had been there.

Oh, absolutely.

Yes.

But only for forensic analysis.

And resale on eBay…

I’d go through it, get what I thought was most valuable, and if there were no identifying names or marks saying it belonged to someone, yes, I’d take it.

No because that would be wrong. <eyes shift>

I mean…it’s TRULY abandoned? No one owns it? I guess I might. I’d have to be pretty sure nobody had ownership though.

Honestly, I would find it hard to believe that it’s really abandoned and nobody wants it, so I might take the money because it’s easily hidden. I wouldn’t want to be carrying bulky items out in case anybody questioned it.

For me it would depend on the circumstances.

I would need to first satisfy the following:
1. There is almost no chance the owners are coming back.
2. There is a good chance someone else will find it and steal it.
3. There is almost no chance of legal consequence and they are not catastrophic.
4. I actually need the stuff because I’m homeless or very poor.
5. Its stuff of actual use, or which I can sell.
6. They have no neigh boughs that I can question about the house and the possessions. Meaning the house is in the middle of nowhere.

Now when all of those criteria are met, I might, just maybe resort to stealing some stuff but I probably wouldn’t clean the place out. And then I’d deal with the trepidation that comes with doing something you know and feel is wrong even if you’re not sure exactly why.

I did this recently. I was living in an abandoned building and there was a spot where people regularly visit and make fire and such. They left in a hurry I presume because of the whether and left a barbeque lighter. I could tell by the fact that it was on the floor and not the brick table that was built, that they had forgotten it. And its kind of out of the way for them to come back for it. And I knew that several other people frequent the area who are actual thieves. There was a very slight, next to nothing chance I could get caught out and if I did the worst I’d face is theft of a lighter from an area that actually was off limits (private property) but not fenced off or belonging to anybody. A kind of recreational facility for members lets say. So I picked it up and used took it. It was actually quite needed as my other lighter was running out and fire was very necessary on a daily basis. Same thing happened some months prior with a pair of sandles which came in quite handy. I thought about leaving it somewhere safe with a note but knew it would end up in the hands of someone other than the owners and it wasn’t a very valuable item.

But I don’t want to seem like I’m virtue signaling. As a matter of fact, I have an actual conviction for theft. No prison time. So… ahem… yep. Not shaming anybody. But I really don’t like when people say things like yes ofcourse why not lets go for it woohoo! It seems peculiar, like they are trying to sell the idea that there’s absolutely nothing wrong going on and you shouldn’t think about it. Not shaming them either. I’ve also done that too.

If it’s listed as historic, odds are removing anything is highly illegal.

@wearemiracles It’s obvious you have put a lot of thought into this and are very experienced with this sort of thing. I would be afraid and intrigued to hang around with you.

@RayaHope Well experienced kleptomaniac wasn’t what I was trying to present haha. Yikes! I was just trying to say, it is wrong, but it’s not that wrong. In my opinion. I find moral question the hardest questions of all and often just overlook them. I don’t think we could hang out though since you are in highschool and I’m a grown adult but if we did I would be exceedingly boring. In any case exploring an abandoned house or facility is quite an adventure but I’ve only done it once and it’s probably dangerous.

^^You have a good head on your shoulders and I respect that. Some people would jump on the chance to be with me in an old house alone. I don’t have much experience searching for antiques or knowing what is valuable but I know what I like when I see it even if it is just some old junk. haha

If I did not own the property, no.

If I owned the property, maybe.

Is there a cupboard crammed full of diamonds somewhere? Because I’m going to pass on the sneakers and purses.

^^ How about the money?
