Can someone explain the armor of God to me?

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24999points) January 1st, 2023

I have problems reading, and would prefer an audiobook or YouTube link.

Is in general and I just want to honestly know more about it.

You probably don’t mean the subject of the 1999 Jackie Chan movie, Operation Condor 2: Armor of God, but in case you do, it’s available on stream at least one place.

It’s a fairly generic term. I’ll bet since before Christianity. It suggests there is some form of protection given by a god to those who do what they decide the god wants.

If you want a better or more specific answer, I think we need more details.

@Smashley I would like to know how to choose my battles better. Also insight into deciding what to and not to care about life that happens to us all.

I would like to know if the armor of God would have protected me in university 23 years ago. Where I made myself a target and was bullied by an ex-girlfriend and ex-friends.
Also I was pestered by Lutherans to join the faith, in the Lutheran Church university.

I was drastically underweight , and was physically assaulted twice from one who claimed to be Jesus Freak, and another from my dorm mate.

@Smashley Also I don’t understand the term “Spiritual Warfare”. I don’t know much about it. My university days was all fighting and less learning. That term seems to apply. Now I learn not to leave my man cave when not necessary.

The armor of God is a concept used by right-wing fundamentalist Christians to mean they somehow are superior to non-Christians. I recommend you do not listen to Christian radio. They’re not telling the truth.

Are there other radio stations you can listen to @RedDeerGuy1 ? ?

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Yes. On FM radio. Is a Bible hour. I get hard up for something to do and listen at night.

@Hawaii_Jake Thanks for the warning. I get desperate for something to do in the evenings.

My Christian friends would invoke the armor of God in prayer to protect them from stuff.

Ephesians 6:10–18
The Whole Armor of God
Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we are not contending against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places. ...

@kruger_d has it. The “armor of God” is merely stating that if you embrace God completely you are more protected from the evil the devil uses. Much of the bible, and phrases like “armor of God” are not talking about the material world, but rather the spiritual. Most of the teachings in the bible go back to following God’s word and trying to live the life He wants you to live.

The armor of God is the protection you receive from Jesus, if not in this life then surely in the next one, when you would otherwise experience eternal damnation.

Crusader popes interpreted it literally, as a call to holy war against the infidel (in this case, Muslims in the Levant). As a general principle, I tend to think the more extreme literal interpretation of a given Biblical is probably the wrong one and that @seawulf575 has correctly explained the meaning of this phrase.

I agree with @Hawaii_Jake, but it generally means to most people what they want it to mean. If they want to feel superior then they believe they have the right to impose their faith on everyone. If its someone that is looking to be comforted then they believe it means being protected from evil in this world. If its someone looking for direction, then they believe its about following in Christ footsteps and spreading the word. If its someone looking to conquer then they believe its about killing anyone that isn’t them and gives them the right to conquer by calling it a holy war. If its someone like myself. I just think it means wrapping yourself in light. And what I mean, is by doing good and not trying to harm anyone. Not acting like you are superior but to love one another and be compassionate. Everyone sees Gods armor as some sort of shield for protection or war.
