Is anyone else experiencing some schadenfreude at Kevin McCarthy's woes?

Asked by janbb (63257points) January 5th, 2023

For those who don’t know, schadenfreude is pleasure derived from someone else’s misfortune. The House is a mess. The one thing they apparently have managed to do is dismantle the metal detectors put in place after 1/6/21 to prevent terrorists from entering the Chamber (Cox Richarson).

What’s your reaction to the dysfunctionality?

I love watching a good train wreck.

Yet it may not be “schadenfreude” as much as it is a feeling of “epicaricacy”.

My first thoughts of today on this is, if you haven’t won in 6 votes, then give it up. You are not wanted. It feels like a guy that has been dumped by his partner but keeps trying to get back together despite all the signs telling him it won’t happen.

A little bit, but I am more annoyed about how all this severely hobbles the working of the government. Again. Thanks, GOP for losing sight of the “public service” aspect of governance. Again.

Cue the conservatives who will once again bring up Hunter Biden’s laptop. <eyeroll>

NEVER take anything a Republican does at face value!!! The FPOTUS doesn’t want to be President again…he wants to be Speaker of the House because it gives him power without the responsibility & public scrutiny. Then he can have the actual President & VP murdered & he’ll assend to President without having to be voted in. So, when Kevin finally steps down, FPOS will be nominated & win on the first ballot.

Thank you @Forever_Free for teaching me a new word that accurately describes the laughs I have had this week.

In many ways, this dates back to 28 years ago and Newt Gingrich as Speaker. Republicans cannot govern. All they can do is throw shit on everything.

I laughed at Matt Gaetz nominating Jim Jordan, presumably because Gaetz knows Jordan turns a blind eye on sexual predators.

@Forever_Free Looking it up they seem to mean the same thing but plaudits to you for a new word!

It’s history in the making and I love history!

It’s very interesting. Conservative values are at stake, such as mandatory budget cuts for any increases, reversing Democratic proxy voting, remote committee work, etc…

Essentially, he’s a little too Democrat for the southern Reps to vote for. And the cussing and strong-arming isn’t going over well.

It’s the Donkeys in Washington running amok. Actually it’s not the Donkeys it’s the Elephants. The Donkeys are unified while the Elephants can’t seem to get everyone in the clown car. You’ve got 90% of Repubs on board and 10% controlling the vote. With the concessions they’re demanding, there is no chance of passing anything through the house, regardless of who gets the gavel.

Help, I’ve fallen and I can’t get up.

janbb's avatar

@Jaxk I’ve now given you two GAs on the same day. Has the sky fallen?

LadyMarissa's avatar

^^ There’s hope for the universe!!! :-))

I mean, it’s never good to have dysfunction. I’m no fan of McCarthy, but realize that the most likely alternative to him is Scalise right? And Scalise is no winner either.

The GOP is in a really terrible state, and it’s exacerbated by a narrow majority that gives more power to a relatively small band of extremists who otherwise would have limited influence. So this situation really isn’t shadenfruede. This is an expression of that group having more power.

Love_my_doggie's avatar

Absolutely yes. The guy spent the past 6–7 years ingratiatingly aligning himself with Donald Trump, including a public turn-around after he had condemned the January 6th attack on the Capitol (“Duh…I change my mind…”). Now, he’s living with the consequences. Trump has endorsed McCarthy, to no avail; as McCarthy helplessly watches that ship sink.

filmfann's avatar

I don’t wish ill for anyone, but Kevin McCarthy can go suck a turd.

jca2's avatar

I heard that McCarthy demanded that the interns in his office already start calling him “Mr. Speaker.” Hahahaha on him! I also read that he has moved into the office of the Speaker and he is not planning to leave there until this is all straightened out.

I love this crap. The Repubs are all in a tizzy. Also that idiot from NY- the liar – hasn’t been sworn in yet. I hope he’s losing some sleep, too.

ragingloli's avatar

Maybe the Dems can ask some Republicans to vote for Jeffries instead, just to rub it in.
You know, after they tried to convince the Dems to vote for McCarthy.
That is what you get for trying to sell weapons to the Vasudans!

I think that would make it even more hilarious.

Jaxk's avatar

@janbb – I must be living in an alternate universe. I don’t know if those GAs were for the good jaxk or the bad jaxk.

chyna's avatar

Now he has gone through 9 votes and lost each one. 1/5/23

jca2's avatar

I was just reading the NY Times updated coverage, looking to see if what someone wrote, above, about the “deals” having to be stuck with even if McCarthy loses is true, but I couldn’t find anything. It’s also not clear at what point McCarthy gives up or his supporters give up and move on to someone else. I know they have other hopeful candidates waiting in the wings, but at what point do they start voting for those people, I don’t know.

jca2's avatar

BTW, Schadenfreude, not schadenfreunde.

janbb's avatar

^^ Oops, you’re right.

KNOWITALL's avatar

@Entropy They want Jordan who has also advised them to vote McCarthy.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

There is no GOP Representative alternative!

But he can’t get the Ultra Right-wingers to vote for him (they want to Impeach both Biden and Harris I think and declare Trump Prez)

flutherother's avatar

I don’t feel much Schadenfreude, I feel more uneasy about the political mess America is in just now. Not that the UK has been much better recently. I’m sure autocrats like Putin enjoy seeing democracies floundering.

LadyMarissa's avatar

I’m loving watching the Fox people doing their version of the Exorcist with their heads spinning on their shoulders!!! LoL

JLeslie's avatar

LOL. It’s a SMH for me, but I understand why some people feel some happiness.

My reaction is Democrats should not gloat, boast, or condescend too much, because as the saying goes, don’t spit in the wind.

jca2's avatar

I was watching Stephen Colbert last night and he was elated! He did a really funny monologue with video for the opener.

Dutchess_III's avatar

11 times! He got voted down 11 times!

janbb's avatar

@Dutchess_III When should he give up? Shouldn’t another candidate come forward??

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Penguin . . like Donald J. Trump . . his name has come up a candidate ?

The Dems may have a winner Hakeem Jeffries!

janbb's avatar

@Tropical_Willie Wouldn’t Jeffries have to get to 2018 votes? I don’t see that happening but it would be great if some Republicans flipped. And as for Trump, I’m ignoring that possibility.

Dutchess_III's avatar

I don’t know @janbb.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

The “Twenty” (stop the steal), GOP members couldn’t stop the Dems winning the Speaker of the House ! ! !

janbb's avatar

And now the clown car is ready to take off! Be prepared for two years of nothing positive getting done.

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Didn’t some of the “Twenty” say they would resign if McCarthy became Speaker ??

More GOP lies . . .

canidmajor's avatar

Interesting that the party that so pushes the idea of “election fraud” is all about buying votes…

filmfann's avatar

@canidmajor Ain’t that the sad truth!

JLeslie's avatar

He’s speaker now, so his method worked. He doesn’t care how it happened or what Democrats say about it.

Schadenfreude is feeling good about someone else’s misfortune and I’m not so sure there is misfortune to be happy about. He’s celebrating and probably so are most of the Republicans.
