Have you heard that Jeff Beck died on January 10, 2023?
According to ABC News & other sources, Jeff Beck died yesterday (Jan 10, 2023) of bacterial meningitis, according to his family. He was 78 years old. My first memories of Jeff was when he replaced Eric Clapton in The Yardbirds. He then started The Jeff Beck Group that included Rod Stewart & Ron Wood. He kinda faded in & out, but I can’t remember when Jeff wasn’t an influence in music. Most recently, he & Johnny Depp have been playing together.
Do you have any special memories of Jeff Beck???

No special memories, but I sure loved his music and am sad to hear that another great is gone.
Sorry I never heard of him, but I’m feel bad he died :(
@smudges I’m somewhat the same. I can’t remember when Jeff wasn’t considered an important part of the music industry, but I don’t seem to have any especially great memories like I do for others. Still, it makes me sad that we’ve lost another legend of my generation!!!
@RayaHope I’m not surprised that you haven’t heard of him as he had pretty much faded out of the music scene by the time you were born. He recently became somewhat prominent again when he & Johnny Depp joined forces to tour together after the Depp/Heard trial. Their style of music is probably not your style of music. Yes, it’s still sad that he’s no longer with us!!!
@janbb Thank you for your sentiment.
Yes I heard and was saddened. He was such a pioneer of guitar sound. I have seen him a few times and most recently last October in Boston.
His daughter Tal Wilkenfeld is an amazing Bass player as well.
Yes, I know his music biography well.
One of my favorites to share is Live at Ronnie Scott’s
We played part of this last night at the end of a Guitar class I am part of at Berklee. Such a great showcase.
R.I.P. to the “guitarist’s guitarist”
The Shape of Things Yardbirds (1966)
At the 1:30 mark is a solo by Beck that changed everything.
The song features Beck’s musical use of feedback, which he learned to control by finding the guitar’s resonant points and bending the strings. Music writers have called his work groundbreaking and cited its influence on Paul McCartney and Jimi Hendrix.
I loved the fact that he also rarely played with a pick. Oh that Thumb!!!
Yesterday I read that Johnny Depp was at his bedside when he passed. I’m sure that was comforting to Jeff, and brave of Johnny. Not everyone would do that.
@Brian1946 & @Forever_Free Thank you for the links!!! I knew more of his music than I thought I did…I just didn’t always know that it was Jeff playing. Also, back then I was young enough that I didn’t appreciate the individualized parts of the song. Rod Stewart was my heartthrob & I didn’t really care who was playing behind him. I just loved the overall sound!!! As I’ve gotten older, I’ve learned to hear more than I did back then. Jeff was definitely a one of a kind guitarist!!!
@smudges I have read that as well. Jeff & Johnny had been touring together & had put out an album back in July 2022. They were supposed to start touring again after the first of the year. I’m not surprised that Johnny was by his side when needed!!!
Brian May recommended this Jeff Beck song. It’s from his Guitar Shop album. You may already be familiar with it; but, I thought I’d share as it is lovely.
@LadyMarissa Love this album from 1989. I pulled out all my vinyl from Jeff and played it last week.
