May I wish you all a Happy New Year?

Asked by Mimishu1995 (23779points) January 17th, 2023

Yeah I know, it’s not January 1st anymore. But according to the Chinese calendar it’s not January 1st yet. And that mean I’m going to celebrate New Year soon!

I was away for a while because I was busy doing all the necessary preparation for the holiday. And it was exhausting, especially when I also had to finish my paperwork so that I can enjoy the holiday without worry. So yeah, that was what was going on with me.

Care to anticipate the holiday with me?

Happy Chinese New Year to you, Mimishu1995! When you have time, maybe let us know what you do to celebrate it?

Mimishu1995's avatar

@Zaku Thanks! I plan to document my celebration if I have time. These days there isn’t anything noteworthy, just me busy cleaning up and getting my work done. Yesterday I went to a friend’s house to eat a big meal her family prepared. It’s a tradition here to eat a big meal before New Year, kind of like the meal during Thanksgiving, but my friend’s family likes to invite people that aren’t family to the party too. I just ate my food, chatted with people and went home soon after though because my friend was too busy cleaning up to gather around anyway.

Hi Mimi, good to hear from you.

Good timing. Earlier today I was looking at Lunar New Year schedules, thinking I should gather some friends for a get-together in Chicago.

There are two parades in Chicago.

1) Saturday, January 28, 2023 – Argyle Street
Argyle is called “New Chinatown” but in fact it is very Vietnamese.
This is a relatively small celebration.

2) Sunday January 29, 2023 – Chinatown
The major parade in Chicago, in the center of Chicago Chinese culture.

Argyle street is better for me, but I will ask my friends about their schedules.

@Call_Me_Jay Hmmm… now I wish I could see the parades too. Here we don’t have any parades, but then again our streets are so small a parade would cause a major traffic jam anyway. Maybe they are in other bigger cities? We usually have firework instead and I guess this year there will be one because my city is running a campaign to attract tourists.

One and a half hour before New Year!

I just came back from a trip with my family around the city. We were supposed to stay out until the firework but my parents are too tired to stay up late. The street was really empty, except for some places where people hang out. And when it was crowded, it was reaaaaaaally crowded, like traffic-jam crowded. Most shops have closed down except for some coffee shops. We just traveled all the way by car without stopping.

It’s New Year now! I’m watching the firework alone because my parents are sleeping.

Happy New Year!

Day 1 of the holiday: in the morning we just went to relatives’ houses to hang out and exchange New Year wishes, and also do that lucky money thing for the kids. There were good snacks offered to us and I really enjoyed the chocolate. I didn’t really enjoy the crowd though, just people talking around and I couldn’t join in because I didn’t know what to talk about. But it was nice to go outside.

The street was empty and most shops were closed. It’s the custom of this day to go visit relatives so it wasn’t surprising no shop was open.

Happy New Year!

What do the kids do with all that money, @Mimishu1995?

Mimishu1995's avatar

@longgone it’s a joke that kids wait for New Year to finally get the money they deserve. And in a way it’s true. The money is theirs now so they are pleased to do whatever they want with it. Saving, spending it on toys… whatever they do. I used to be that kid that waited for New Year to “earn a salary”. Now as an adult that has to give out money, I start to see the side of the adults that gave me money and experience their emotion. But I bring some joy to the kids so that’s one thing I can be happy about.

I even drew some short comics depicting the ironic side of the tradition I will upload them here when I can. I drew them as a person who received the money. Now as the person who gives the money, I am now looking at the side that the comic is making fun of. The comic still remains funny.
