What is the physical reason for getting the munchies when you are high?

I think it hits the appetite center in the brain and my own theory is it calms you down too. If you’ve ever been very anxiety ridden to the point of having trouble eating, like a sudden devastating loss of a loved one or some other acutely stressful time in your life, if you take Xanax one of the things it usually helps is to bring back your appetite and reduce the nausea or digestive track problems that come with the acute anxiety for a lot of people.
@canidmajor Thank you. That is what I’m looking for. Now, side question: Why does it only want to make you eat junk food?
@seawulf575: probably the density of food value. High fat, high carb (including sugars) food is very high in immediate, basic food value. We call it “junk food”, but it’s value as being quickly satisfying doesn’t care about a cultural designation.
