The most important thing is to make all of your payments — particularly credit card and loan (e.g., student loan or mortgage) payments — on time. If you must carry a balance on your credit cards, keep it below 40 percent of your credit limit and make the biggest payments on the credits cards with the highest interest rates first.
It takes seven years for negative information to stop appearing on your credit report (ten years if you've declared bankruptcy).
Go to bank or multiple banks and get a total of 2-3 $1000 CDs. Now go to other banks and take out 2-3 $1000 loans using the CDs as Collateral. Use the money from the loans to pay of the loans monthly. This should help build your credit. Then get a credit card and have all your monthly bills billed to the CC. Pay off the balance of the CC every month in full. This should also help.
I went through bankruptcy almost 2 years ago. I used cash and my debit card for a while, and saved up for a new car. I put a down-payment that was more than half the value of the vehicle. This helped me get approved and lowered my monthly payment, so now I send extra (often more than double what's due).
About 6 months ago, I got a credit card. I was able to get one unsecured. I use it for gas and other purchases, including the iPhones, , and pay in full every month. I also kept a couple store cards from before the bankruptcy, and I have always paid those in full.
I will soon get a little money from an inheritance, and I will start looking to get a mortgage to purchase my first home. I am hopeful that by paying extra and not having too many lines of credit, someone will give me a reasonable deal. I'll be watching the replies here for additional advice!
