Can Metamucal cause frequent urination (NSFW)

Asked by RedDeerGuy1 (24986points) February 2nd, 2023

I’ve been on Metamucal for about one to two years, and I have had frequent urination for about that time.

I will discuss with my family doctor on March 1st. I would like to be helped in preparing what I need to say to my doctor.

The same doctor diagnosed me with I.B.S. ( Irritable bowel syndrome), and recommend Metamucal one to two years ago.

What can I substitute for Metamucal? Like fiber from cereal and fruits?

I really doubt it’s the fiber, unless it is making you constipated, which can affect urination. Metamucil is taken with water – perhaps you are just going more because you are drinking more?

The doctor will tell you if the amounts you go are a problem, physiologically. It’ll help to take a week’s worth of data to help the doctor. Just record the frequency and relative volume. So the doctor has something to go on, other than your opinion of what “frequent” means. Chances are you are all good, but again, make sure the doctor says that. There are plenty of further inquiries a urologist can make, but most of them are kinda unpleasant.

Sorry, but I think most questions about your bodily functions are best left for the doctor’s visits.

@RedDeerGuy1 You are getting to an age where these kinds of issues start to affect most men. You may have an enlarged prostate.

So yes, talk to your doctor about it. Responsible flutherites will, as @janbb said, tell you that ”...most questions about your bodily functions are best left for the doctor’s visits.”

@janbb @zenvelo I asked my doctor several times, and she changes the subject. Just wondering if any one else has a similar experience with Meta-mucal.

Also I want to share and talk about my concerns because I worry. I will update after March 1st when I have an appointment with my family doctor.

I have not seen any increase in urination since eating more fiber or taking any bulking drink mix.
Do you take the Metamucil just once a day or a certain amount with each meal? Try taking it in certain amounts with each meal instead of all at once, since all food in your stomach doesn’t get all mixed up like in a blender..

@kritiper I take at 5pm every day, and gulp it down.

I agree with janbb. And when your doctor changes the subject, point it out to her. You pay her salary. Advocate for yourself, no one else can.

It has never affected me that way. I take MCT oil now, and it’s much more palatable.

But I’m not a doctor nor do I have IBS.

@RedDeerGuy1 Thank you for telling us in your details that you are seeing your doctor on March 1 and will talk about this and explaining that you’re looking for information to better be able to talk to your doctor.

I take a fiber supplement daily. It’s similar to Metamucil. I drink a lot of water throughout the day, so I go to the bathroom often. I go once during the night, because of my age. I use the bathroom a lot, because I drink a lot of water. It’s not because of the fiber supplement.

I hope your doctor will talk to you about your concerns. If you are getting up during the night to use the toilet often, that is definitely something to talk to your doctor about. If it’s daytime, it’s less of a concern.

Ok I talked with my pharmacy, and they said that Meta-mucal doesn’t have that side effect.

I’m glad you’re taking care of matters by reaching out for ideas and calling the pharmacy. Good job.
