Why won’t my computer come on?

Asked by smudges (11253points) February 16th, 2023 from iPhone

Keyboard and speaker lights are on, but the screen is black. Any ideas to try? I’m technologically challenged; please keep in mind when answering. Have tried turning it off and back on.

Sometimes the video monitor has its own power switch on the edge somewhere. Look for that, and press it when you find it.

I know it sounds odd, but my monitor on my computer at work turned itself off once. I had no idea there was a separate power switch just for the monitor. Computers are weird.

Omg! It’s on and I’m keeping my fingers crossed. So far so good! Ty Ty Ty!

Yeah, I was gonna say maybe the monitor switch is off but Hawaii has it covered.

One suggestion when trying to do ANYTHING with a computer, I find it helps to use the KISS principle…OR…Keep It Simple Stupid. The dumber it sounds & the less likely you feel it will help, TRY IT!!!
My first step is to shut down & start back up. If that doesn’t fix it, I start with the KISS. Whenever my brain thinks “No, that can’t be it” that’s where I start!!!
Double checking cords (unplug & then plug back in) can be very successful as well.

^^ Yup! After turning it off and on a couple of times and letting it ‘rest’ between times, I checked the plugs…well, the ones I could reach (getting on my knees hurts like hell so I avoid it). I never would have thought of my monitor! But the buttons are on the bottom of the screen so I could have easily bumped it/them. My first reaction was panic, thinking the hard drive went out.

@all thanks for responding! and a special thanks to @Hawaii_Jake because his simple solution saved the day!
