How can Fluther deter bots/trolls/ne'er-do-wells?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37734points) February 21st, 2023

We have seen a user return repeatedly to disrupt Fluther over the past several months, and recently, there has been an increase in his attacks. We know he was banned, so we can surmise he is using a VPN to create a new IP address over and over to get around the bans.

What can the site do to make such attacks stop?

We could instigate some type of verification process upon signing up for an account. I don’t know what that would entail, but it’s an idea.

We could limit a new user’s access to the site for the first 24 hours, or we could make it for any length of time we desire. I am a member of a group on Reddit that doesn’t allow users with accounts less than 3 days old to post anything.

Do you have more ideas?

Here’s one thought that has occurred to me during the present onslaught: allowing us, perhaps with a special key, to see old posts of returning banned members. We may be able to trace patterns and recognize repeat offenders before they do much damage. I wanted to do that today, but the posts of the past user I suspected have been blocked.

Of course, any ideas posted here are visible to anyone, signed in or not.

I would gladly pay an one time fee of $2 or so. In order to make a paper trail, and so we could take legal action.

I would say ban the IP address but he is using a VPN like bitifender or Nord. I think we should ban the location if they are from Russia, then cut off support for Russia.

Could fluther go by their email address? He can’t have that many different email addresses can he? I saw he was changing like every few minutes there for a while and wow was he fast at becoming “different” aliases!

Sadly there is little currently to make them stop. One can only recognize their play and ploy and ignore. Ignore it like the spam and phishing in email.

@Dig_Dug that sounds like a good idea but they could make another email account.

@KRD Yeah, I suppose you’re right, but darn he was “so many people” all in such a short time.
