If YouTube is based in California, USA how come most of their video's are from the UK and Russia?

Asked by Dig_Dug (4259points) March 1st, 2023

Or is that all they allow in certain areas? Unless I want to watch boring stuff like US politics and American sports. (yawn) lol

I can’t remember seeing any videos from Russia on YouTube, UK aren’t rare but not very frequent either, maybe 1/10.

I see a lot of videos on YouTube that are not from UK or Russia.

Do you have any statistics for that?

Otherwise, I live in Vietnam and most of the videos on my homepage are from Vietnam, so I declare that most videos on Youtube are from Vietnam! ~

Hey @cheebdragon this channel is from Russia and I watch it all the time, but I really like big cats. https://youtu.be/heu5Vrqm5o4

YouTube tends to show you more videos similar to the videos you have already watched so it’s possible you are seeing lots of UK and Russian videos because you watch some once and now it keeps showing you them and you keep watching them.

I always find it amusing what it suggests when I clear the cache and start fresh.

It must be from what @Lightlyseared said. I watched a few videos about science and music, many of those appear to be from those areas. Even after I refresh or eliminate my history, they still comeback like I never did that. May also have something to do with my subscriptions.

I don’t have the same problem as far as UK & Russia goes; however, I have noticed that they get really heavy on recommending certain vids from things that I’ve watched recently. So, when I don’t care for their new recommendations, I change my habits for a few days & their recommends change with me!!! I also go through my subscriptions every so often & unsubscribe from many of them & then I start searching for NEW channels to add in. It’s a pain in the ass but I find many that I am NO longer interested in following. At least once a month I take a day to “link hop”. I go to the home page & do a search for a specific subject. I then choose one vid & from there I look down the recommends on the right side for something that looks interesting & click on it & continue to click on the unknown link to see what I can find. One of my favorite searches is “babies” or “baby animals” or” baby laughing” or“puppies”. I’ve also noticed that giving a thumbs up can greatly influence your recommends. Deleting your history does NOTHING towards changing your recommends. Just don’t choose a YT recommend for a few days & change your direction with intent & your recommends will eventually follow!!!

@Dig_dug if your logged in with your Google account it remembers what you watched separately from the cache

The almighty Algorithm just serves you videos it thinks you want to see.
You should offset it with some videos from Australia

The only Russian videos I’ve seen were music videos I deliberately sought out. So of course more of them showed up for a while. But this is only recommendations based on what I’ve watched. I can seek out anything I want, and so can you. It’s not limited to a singole narrow category.

I don’t see recommendations from California either, unless they fall into a category I visit. Why mention California? What were you expecting?

Dig_Dug's avatar

@Jeruba YT is headquartered in Cal. that’s why I mentioned it. But most of the Russian vids are music/dancing. I do get a lot of videos with people speaking in an Australian and British accents. Must be the types of videos I’m watching.

I stumbled onto this music video just now and thought it was great. How far can you get without laughing out loud? I wonder what kind of recommendations I’m going to get now.

Not to imply that they’re all laughable, but some are certainly, let’s say, surprising.

@Dig_Dug, I know, but what were you expecting, California music?

RocketGuy's avatar

YouTube has servers all over the world so it doesn’t really matter if their HQ is in CA.

Forever_Free's avatar

Because we are a Worldwide Community. There is also a good amount from East Bum F Iowa.

YouTube definitely needs to tweak its algorithm a bit, for about a year every time I left the room YouTube would autoplay Joe Rogan podcast episodes even though I’ve never searched for anything remotely related.

@cheebdragon You have my deepest sympathy’s.
