What's the wildest thing you've done or seen while on vacation~holiday?

Asked by Dig_Dug (4259points) March 2nd, 2023

I’ve seen some amazing places, beautiful architecture and outstanding gardens, but I am a little smitten by Niagara Falls. Something about being under those falls with that mist all over my body. I try and hang off the railing as far as I can. I know there are plenty of nicer falls all over the world, maybe another time.

When I was a child I left a bottle in turtle park in Alberta’s parkland. When I was a teenager I collected it and put it in the garbage bin.

Ooh if you want crazy? Then how about this?

On old-fort-point in Jasper National park I crazy carpeted down the hill and stopped inches from the cliff. I only did it once.

Whale watching in Alaska was really cool. The whales come within inches of the boat, swimming so close you can practically touch them. Amazing the boat never gets capsized. We saw 8–10 whales at a time all breaching at once. That they did at a distance, maybe 30–40 feet away. It was incredible.

I went to China in 1984. The food there was nothing like Chinese food here.
Rat, slug, monkey brain.

Toured the Mayan ruins in Costa Maya with an old Mayan tour guide. Interesting. Also tried parasailing once. LOTS of fun

A Richter 7.0 quake (2021 or 2020), and a wildfire (2014ish), on a Greek island.
Especially the quake was a very moving phenomenon.
The fire was emotionally very hard to witness.

Got blood poisoning while trekking through the Himalayas, and then paid 5 rupees to be attacked by a cobra in New Delhi. ;)

@MrGrimm888 Hey, in the heat of the moment, who has time for blankets and planning and…common sense, whatever that is? (snicker)
@Brian1946 Why would you want to be attacked by a cobra?!

Probably a wild ride down a mountain slope near near Jackson Hole, Wyoming. We were on a trip with our son in law and daughter about 12 years ago, Yellowstone, Custer Battlefield National Monument, Mount Rushmore and a few other places. It was in March and snowing. We we going down a mountain road on slick conditions and I thought the brakes weren’t going to hold. We slipped down more than drove down, but we made it. Being a Texan and used to hot weather most of the time ( we hit 90F a few days ago) I was somewhat freaked out by the experience and amazed that it was cold and snowing in March. Pretty wild.

I haven’t done this, but I’ve heard about it.

Feed seagulls French fries that have been soaked in vodka. (Something to do when you have time to kill in a motel/hotel.)

While hiking in Idaho, I happened upon a Mother moose giving birth.
I watched for 2 hours. Amazing.

Fed sting-rays in Grand Bahamas (while standing in waist deep water), fishing in inner tubes in reservoirs in Hawaii (catch and release) thirty years ago and hiking two miles to a restaurant in jungles east of Puerto Vallarta (only people at restaurant, great food – - – spiny lobster)

Years ago @Caravanfan and I were backpacking on a beach in 1992 a few miles from the epicenter of the magnitude 7.2 Ferndale earthquake that struck that day. I saw the sand moving up and down in waves as we were hiking. I kept looking out at the ocean for signs of a tsunami. We were not far from cliffs so he was looking out for falling rocks. When we went to pick up our car, we found that a landslide had blocked the road out of the parking lot. People were gathered around our car because it was the only one whose owner had not yet been found. They felt quite relieved when we got there. We felt quite relieved when a bulldozer plowed the landslide flat enough for us to drive out.

One time in Yellowstone I was taking a picture near one of the mud volcanoes and dropped the lens cap of the board walk and it nearly fell into the muddy volcano.

RocketGuy's avatar

Falling into bubbling mud is super dangerous – it’s at least 200°F and sticks on, so will cook your flesh more deeply than boiling water can.

It may sound normal now, but on a trip through the Rockies, they were blasting rock so traffic was stopped for about two hours.
It was a hippie fest and they all whipped out bongs and started travelling the line, sitting in the various cars and chatting while getting high. It was surreal.

The armed police in Mexico and people literally living in the jungle with no electric or water, plus the fancy whorehouses were different.

This wasn’t exotic, by no means, but I once was on this dairy farm and just so happened to be a cow giving birth and I was asked to help pull the calf out. It was beautiful and extremely gross at the same time.

Mrs Squeeky and I bungee jumped off a bridge does that count?

Dig_Dug's avatar

Sure that counts, since I’m deathly afraid of heights, I’d pissed my pants if I had to do that. Like jumping out of a perfectly fine running airplane, NO freaking way! :)

MrGrimm888's avatar

^Death.…..Is the ONLY adventure!....

I’m going jetpacking with sharks while on acid this summer. No more pusscrastinating out on that one…

Dig_Dug's avatar

Oh I sure hope that’s some kind of metaphor. Otherwise, how about signing this million dollar life insurance policy granting me sole beneficiary?! ;)

MrGrimm888's avatar

^I’ll consider it…..
