Correct. I don’t like to eat fish…
I LOVE eating fish! As much as I could love eating something.
Mimi. I’ll get in my canoe today, and start paddling your way. I should be there in Southeast Asia in about six months… If I somehow survive the trip….
Fishing is exact as you described. “Magic!”
When I was a kid (and still,) there’s nothing more magical than throwing a hook with some insect, or shrimp, or minow on it in the water and then pulling a different animal out! In fresh water, you typically fish very intentionally for each species. You know what you’re probably going to catch. On salt water, you can try for certain fish, but you never know what you will catch. That’s awesome. Well. Usually. It’s not fun bringing a pissed off crab into my canoe with me. I’ve had to battle some big crabs with my paddle, to save my toes… Most salt water fish have teeth too. So we’ll need some good tools to get hooks out, instead of our hands…
I love taking people out in the water, who’ve never been before.
It’s fun watching people experience fishing from a small vessel, for the first time. In a canoe, even a small fish can pull us around and put up a big fight. You always think you hooked a monster. But it’s usually a surprisingly small fish.
Unless we’re fishing in the marsh for Red-tails. Those guys are huge! Just one will feed a few people. I have a decent recipe where I clean them into big slices (not filets, because I leave the scales on and the bones in,) and put them on a grill scale side down. Some good spices and red pepper flakes and a few minutes of careful cooking and it’s great.
Or. Some sheepshead. Another big guy, that feeds a couple people. But they have crazy teeth. You have to get ready for hand to fin combat, if you bring one of those into the boat…
I prefer pan fried bluegills. That’s what I brave our freshwater swamps for here.
You’d have to learn to be calm around big alligators, and snakes though… That’s not easy…
If it were only a perfect world Mimi, I’d take you around our local waterways in my canoe. We’d have a lot of fun, even if we didn’t catch anything.
You’d likely get to get really close to some dolphins, and huge sea turtles. It’s a different experience, in a paddle vessel. No engine, to scare away the shy animals… It always feels like I’m living like I’m supposed to, when I’m in my canoe… Magical indeed…
TJBM has a hobby that can make them feel like nothing else…(nothing dirty, this is a @canidmajor thread ;)...
