Do Republicans and Democrats in the US live in an alternate universe?

Asked by jca2 (16827points) March 9th, 2023

I’m thinking of January 6th, but it can be applied to other things, as well.

January 6th, I know what I saw on the news that day, and I know what I saw in the news in the days, weeks and months after. Hordes breaking windows, doors, pushing through barricades, jumping all over the Capitol building, hanging on the Capitol building, sitting at Nancy Pelosi’s desk with their feet up, parading flags in the lobby and other public areas of the building.

Now, Republicans are showing video of peaceul tourism on January 6th. They’re saying the other story was all a scam. They’re saying the people that were imprisoned were arrested for false reasons and are rotting in jail for things that really weren’t that bad.

Some from both sides are saying they believe the stories of the Capitol police, the DC police and others, and they know what they saw. Some are saying this is a false narrative meant to push a false story about an incident which wasn’t that bad, yes a window was broken, minor damage, but nobody died on that day and the Capitol police led people around and opened doors in the building. The guy who got ten years for attacking an officer with a metal flag pole shouldn’t have gotten ten years, because a metal flag pole is not a weapon (just one example).

There’s even a recording of Kevin McCarthy from January 6th saying that people are hurt and this is “not the way to do it.”

Is this baffling, or is it just me?

Sure looks like it to me as well,
It’s all cooked up by the evil left wing media to make the Jan6 snuggle fest look bad.

As all the memos and emails from Fox have disclosed, the GOP is full of deceit and lying from its very core to the top of the party.

Waiting for wulfie to tell us what really happened! ~

Crooked fright-wing propaganda! All lies, “tourist” don’t get 10 years for touring. We all know what happened no matter what these con-artist try to spin. Treason insurrection and we know who was behind the whole thing, the orange orangutan.

Remember, those few clips were taken from 40,000 hours of security camera videos and were carefully picked by Tucker Carlson, TC, for Total Crap, who we know has no morals and is a total shill for Fox ratings. Maybe for a few seconds things were peaceful. Maybe. But we know it did not stay that way for long. People were hurt, windows smashed, property damaged and stolen, the Vice president of the US was threatened with hanging. All of this was on Drump’s watch!!!

Imagine a car accident with perfectly clear video of the intersection from all directions. Now ask TC to review the video. He could select the a few milliseconds before impact and state that the car was driving normally.

No matter how you look at it, one fact is indisputable: On January 6th, 2020, the day of the riots, insurrection, and defiling of government property, Donald J Trump was President of the United States! That is where the buck needs to stop!

Just like the Reichstag Fire wasn’t the doing of Nazis, right? Nazis gonna Nazi. And they accuse the Left of changing history? I mean, I saw a movie as a kid with a guy named Uncle Remus singing on a country road, followed by happy little birds and bees, singing Zippedy Doo Dah.. What more proof do you need that slaves were well treated and happy, and slavery wasn’t bad at all? Dang lefty trouble makers!

Anyone of those people inside the building were guilty of a crime they were trespassing on federal property, not everyone was guilty of violence that and the non violent ones were not arrested, and so far a 1000 have been charged.

The violence was AI generated fake video.

People died! I will say no more.

SQUEEKY2's avatar

But,but @Hawaii_Jake according to our friendly fright wingers the only one that actually died was that peaceful woman protester that innocently jumped through a barricaded door and was warned to get back but she was just innocent.
the others died outside the building so that doesn’t count and that Capital police officer died the next day in hospital, the riot had nothing to do with it, yeah right.
It really does sound like separate realities.

The way I see it, this is once again an example of some Republicans have the complete inability to put themselves in someone else’s shoes.

There is HOURS of violence, vandalism, and terrorizing behavior.

It doesn’t matter if a rapist or killer was calm at times, he raped and killed someone.

There is no such thing as tourists just walking through the Capitol. People can’t just walk into the Capitol, they need permission. Try to walk in and you get stopped.

I hope we teach our kids that if their friends start rioting that they should go the other way and call their parents to come pick them up. Don’t be part of the crime.

Back to my very first point, I tell Republicans who think there were tourists in the Capitol to imagine 50 uninvited people coming into their house, some of them break a couple of windows, a couple are calling your wife’s name to “come out come out from wherever you are.” They get arrested and afterwards some of the people say, “oh we never would have hurt anyone, we saw the door was open and thought it was an open house.”

Those people are total garbage if they are too stupid to not realize that they were part of a violent mob.

This isn’t a protest of people on the streets and some violence broke out and some innocent people might have been near the violence by happenstance. These people went beyond the barriers and followed the violence onto Capitol grounds and into the building.

Yes, there are two worlds right now. I don’t think half the country is going along with Tucker, but probably a good 20–30%.

Same universe, of course, but just may look at it a bit differently. Life goes on.

I was amused yesterday that PBS NewsHour fired a shot by referring to him as “Fox personality Tucker Carlson.” They even called out their phrasing as part of their media education for kids. (Search the page for “personality.”)

Seems like every national story these days is “it’s A” until a few weeks later and then “it’s not A, it’s B.” Makes you wonder.

@Acrylic Yeah, JFK only had a headache. Life goes on.

I mean, if you only showed photos and videos of Hitler smiling and playing with kids and dogs, you could certainly construct a narrative of him being an upstanding guy who never did anything foul.

^^This!

It’s what I say about physically abusive spouses. So many good qualities except they put their spouse in the hospital every so often.

They do live in alternate universes.

But one of those universes is generated by the likes of Fox News, which has admitted to lying about it.

kritiper's avatar

Figuratively speaking, yes.

They sure seem to.

This is not about the real truth.
Psychopaths by definition will staunchly believe and defend whatever they put in their head.

Apparently, Fox News viewers are unfazed to read that the news team reported that the 2020 election was stolen even though they knew this was not true. What kind of slogans would alternative universe news teams use? How about: Fox News, unconstrained by the truth! Or, Hear the news you want to hear!

L Ron Hubbard Jim Jones David Koresh Donald Trump. And cult followers. Obey without question, drink the KoolAide, watch for the UFO behind the Comet, set fire to your own quarters, Jan 6 was an innocent tourist excursion. Because Leader says so. And we have the audacity to critique nations like N. Korea and Iran? Shut the fuck up America.
