If video games like "Fortnight" are so addictive then why don't we use addictive games to motivate students?
My local news stated that parents are making a class action lawsuit against “Fortnight.”
For example I use “Duolingo”, and it works for me to learn French. They have animation and rewarding beeps. I have been on a 14 day streak. With awards and it’s addictive.

Some parents don’t know how to parent. Why make a class action lawsuit when they can just have their kids stay off the game, ya know parent a little! Maybe they shouldn’t have kids?! People always wanting someone else to do THEIR job for them.
Maybe I’ll sign-up for Fortnight now just to piss them off!
Lets sue the bad parents. Yeah. Lawsuits for everyone because they can’t take responsibility. I can see how far that one will go.
Well the kids get quite a bit of computer time. They learn better. I’ll say that.
A friend of mine created a card game to teach children math. I don’t remember the name of it right now. Had Norse and Minions and I don’t remember what else.
Ever hear of Oregon Trail? It taught an entire generation of kids that dysentery was something that could kill you.
Motivate them to do what? Play more stupid games??
Certainly history could be taught using a computer game. I remember taking a high school science class where we dissected fetal pigs. It would be more effective, not to mention easier on the pig, to use an anatomical simulation. It might also help in chemistry class to use simulations of mixing chemicals. If you create a simulated explosion, nobody gets hurt.
Oregon Trail!!! My Mom was on the development team of that game.
Best Game!!!
They’re working on educational things, not “games” @kritiper.
@Dutchess_III Fortnite is a game, not an education modality.
As to the OP, Fortnite is not addictive, as it does not meet the criteria of an addiction. It is just a very enjoyable pastime. So are many things that are more fun than homework or studying.
Update my streak has lasted 595 days. At the Duolingo free French lessons.
@Zenvelo…it’s the computer that’s addictive not just the games.
My point was that kids LOVE doing lessons on the computer. They are more focused and motivated when working on the computers rather than teacher, pencil and paper.
Much of that could be because they work at their own speed. Kind of like SRA reading in elementary school.
