Are any of you following the show Star Trek Picard?

If you’re a Star Trek fan especially Next Generation you probably are and for this season 3 they seem to be pulling out all the stops! Each episode is getting better and better. I’m just blown away with what’s going on in the story line, they are even showing all the old ships even Kirk’s Enterprise.

While S3 is lightyears ahead of S1 and 2, which were, frankly, insultingly dreadful, it still is not the revelation that some have made it out to be. It still has some of modern Trek’s detrimental calling cards. The visual and thematic darkness, the swearing, and the unnecessary gruesome violence.
And while the greater adherence to established canon is appreciated, it seems excessive.
Episode 6 was especially egregious, with them ogling at all the previous starships at the fleet museum, or all the memberberries at the Daystrom Station, culminating with both a wasted cameo appearance by Moriarty, and yet another revival of Data.
Not to mention the, so far, stupid twist of the bad guys stealing Picard’s corpse for some evil scheme.

I believe as a sorta final farewell to the next gen series (and Jean-Luc Picard particularly) they are doing it justice by throwing in so many of the little things that made it so great. All these references falling back to key parts and snippets of the past I think true fans will appreciate. The Data and Moriarty interaction was brilliant! And the flashback to the very first episode with Riker meeting Data for the first time, marvelous! The “stupid twist”..well it is called Picard for a reason.

It’s paramount+ only right? So subscription? I have too many streaming services as it is. I probably wouldn’t mind watching it if it were on something I already have. But I’m not really a Trekkie. I liked TOS quite alot, but TNG was always just rehashing that same formula but decades later with better effects.

My college roommate was a Trekkie and so I watched DS9 with him while I was in college, but I stopped once I left college because it wasn’t more than minimally interesting. I’ve dabbled in an episode or two of some other Trek shows (Enterprise, Voyager) but felt that these were all just paint by numbers rehashes. And not even good ones. TNG was at least a GOOD repeat of the formula. I skipped Discovery but heard bad things from pretty much everyone. I don’t think I’ve heard anyone recommend Picard to me.

I actually felt that Orville was the best Star Trek show I’ve seen since TNG, and GalaxyQuest continues to be the best Trek movie of all time. Stargate SG-1 kind of did Trek better than all of them (though it wasn’t the same premise of course).

Oh gosh yes! I LOVE it, I’m a Trekkie can’t you tell? :D I’m still waiting for my Lower Desks! I’m gonna explode if I don’t get it soon! But Picard is so great and I love how things are coming together. I want more.

I only saw the first season, but thank you for this Q. Maybe I will sign up to watch season 2 and 3 next month.

I’m so excited. I’ll have to sign up.

I saw season 1 and 2, without Paramount+, I’m pretty sure (not sure on what).

It was an odd phenomenon for me, as it (especially season 2) was mind-bogglingly-stupidly written in many many ways and places, and yet, I kept watching and didn’t suffer a whole lot. I guess I’d already lost hope of liking much Star Trek after seeing TNG and Star Trek Generations (and especially the JJ Abrams Trek), so I have almost no attachment to it, though it does seem pretty pathetic how far Trek has fallen.

I guess if season 3 is notably better, I might watch it too at some point, if I stumble across it.

Nah, I’m a big fan of the original series but the new shows don’t do it for me. I’m the same way with the Star Wars franchise. Loved the first two original movies but the sequels just don’t do it for me.

Dig_Dug's avatar

@Zaku Season 3 is by far the best, you really should give it a try. I appreciate how they tie in the old with the new. To me it comes full circle.

@NoMore I agree Star Wars really went off the rails with those other episodes to me to. You know I didn’t even watch the last three movies let along those spin-offs.

You and me both Dig.

Every Disney Star Wars film someone avoids, is hours of stupidity avoided.

A fan of the STNG series. I think it’s the best Star Trek series ever. Saw the first season of Picard and did not warm up enough to it to continue. The only memorable scene I seem to remember is Picard and Data engaged in another meaningful philosophical conversation. A treat.

@NoMore Feel the same way. Twenty minutes into Phantom Menace when it was released, I knew Lucas messed up his own franchise. Teary-eyed to see the Falcon fly once again in the trailer of Abram’s take but another failure imo. It’s all crap after the Original Trilogy imo. Maybe except Rogue and Solo. Almost decent level.

I’m not.

Gonna get downgraded from Trekkie to wannabe Trekkie. Ha.

@raum Wait a dog gone minute!

We love it. The last episode was epic. My friends who are really into the various shows aren’t as impressed but for enertainment value, it’s great.

Dig_Dug's avatar

@KNOWITALL I so agree! Marvelous show, I am stoked to see what’s next!

@Dig_Dug That, the Mandalorian and Below Decks are pretty much the only weekly shows we watch, other than Fresh Prince/Belaire.
I loved that they brought back so many regulars last week!
