So say we accept that guns won't be regulated, what is the next course of action?

Say we don’t. We don’t have to accept that guns are here to stay. For the sake of your argument or any other.

The best course of action to keep people safe is to begin to buy back the guns.

Americans are much too selfish. They would never voluntarily give up guns like the Australians did after their mass shooting.

We can initiate a national buy back after we outlaw everything that’s not reasonably for hunting.

Mandatory firearm safety courses for everyone above the age of 7.

I think we will need to have armed guards at every school and store and bank and anywhere that the crazy people may try to kill people.

Think of the employment boom that will start, armed guards everywhere what a sight in the land of the free .

I know, I don’t like it either but it sure beats dead children all over the place :(
I’m still in school and you can bet this is a real concern for us. So far we have been spared, but it’s always in the back of our minds and I’ve been jumpy more than once.

@Hawaii_Jake you can push back sure, but what would you want done if we can’t get guns off the street, if no new regulations can be passed? This has to be a contingency

Arm everyone and have them take a course in proper gun safety/handling.

@janbb I have some ideas but it’s not just a problem for responsible gun owners. It’s everyone’s problem.

Declare no gun zones where the carrying of guns is prohibited. Set up scanners like you see in airports to check on people entering these areas. Train AI systems to read scanner output and identify people carrying guns. Gently remind such people that they are in a no gun zone and weapons are forbidden.

The next course of action needs to be a true, honest, evaluation of why people shoot others. I have a few ideas off the top of my head but there are probably many more. People shoot others for criminal reasons (gangs, for example) or for attention/suicide reasons. Some shoot others out of self-defense. There are a few others but they are relatively minor…walking in on your spouse cheating – crimes of passion. Looking at this, I see conflicting ideas as to the shootings. One law doesn’t fit all. Each of these reasons need to be dealt with separately. But coming to good answers that can be used has to start with honest discussions about the issues.

Permit lawsuits against firearm manufacturers. Require liability insurance for gun owners.

@seawulf575 each of those disparate reasons have one thing in common: easy access to firearms that are designed and created with the sole purpose of being able to kill someone.

“Guns don’t kill people. People kill people.” And if they really want to, they WILL find a way!

Elect law and order officials.

I’ll never accept that. I have school age grands and they can shove guns up their ass. Unless maybe they are ready to discuss abortion rights. Problem? Suck it up buttercup.

I’ve always supported a mental health database used in conjunction with law enforcement flagging at the state level. The problem with that is that many are and always will be undiagnosed.

The only mass shooter I knew personally would easily have made that list and deaths could have been prevented.

@Blackwater_Park Once you’ve ruled out the regulation of guns which many of us would like to see, it is then up to the responsible gun owners to come up with alternatives.

@KNOWITALL It was the premise of the question that guns can’t be regulated, not mine. I’m responding to that. But not interested in arguing.

Lobby for government-subsidized life insurance for all staff working in and children enrolled in public schools, colleges and universities with a minimum $X million payout upon death from school shooting.

@Cupcake I heard the same thing about police violence against minorities. That if enough policies were paid out, it would stop the brutality. Sigh.

Enact legislation that prevents the NRA (and other entities) from paying politicians so much money.

Take care of our children when they are young. Give them free breakfast and lunch at school. Give them free mental and physical health care. Do not let any child go unnoticed.

I think threatening suicidal mass shooter with execution is clearly the best logical deterrent. And if that fails we could just cure all mental illness. And if that fails we could just arm everyone, because people will absolutely be responsible gun owners, and would never act carelessly or get into situations where it’s entirely ambiguous who the bad guy is and all you have to do is say “I fear for my life” before you start killing people to justify the shooting. Just think of how safe America would feel if everybody was a Kyle Rittenhouse.

@zenvelo But the question starts with assuming they aren’t going away and regulations won’t happen any time soon. I’m trying to understand the “why” of gun violence which I believe should be the next step.
