It is International Donor Conception Awareness Day. If you have donated eggs or sperm, or have a child conceived by donated genetic material, care to share your story?

Asked by canidmajor (21589points) April 27th, 2023

I was able to conceive my child with donated sperm 35 years ago. There was a huge pushback against single women doing this, but I persisted and was fortunate.

It is still a problem for many (not just single women) who go this route, and there is still a stigma.

I’d love to hear others’ stories.

I’m sorry you’re not getting much response. I don’t think a lot of people go that route simply because it’s not necessary for them. My ex and I checked into IVF using my eggs and his sperm along with a surrogate, but the price would have been just too much. If I remember, back then it was around $80,000/cycle, and if it didn’t “take”, oh well. Better luck next cycle.

I worked in an OB/GYN clinic and sometimes we had 5 inseminations in a week. I was also lucky enough to go to a teaching hospital to watch an in vitro fertilization performed under a microscope to creat an embryo. Amazing!

I’m so happy for you that it worked out!

@smudges, I was indeed very fortunate, especially because there was no insurance coverage back then. I am sorry you had to go through all that. The procedure I has was GIFT (Gamete Intrafallopian Transer) which they don’t do any more.
I’m surprised that this hasn’t generated more discussion, in most contexts people usually have a lot to say on the subject.
