Are you going to watch King Charles' coronation?

Asked by Hawaii_Jake (37748points) April 29th, 2023

Pageantry. Ritual. Splendor.

Wealth. Excess. Privilege.

Many people adore such things, and just as many despise it.

I will watch the highlights after it’s over. What about you?

I know it will probably be on TV all day. I won’t change my schedule to watch it but I will probably have it on if I’m around. I don’t adore such things, I’m not a royal watcher but I don’t despise these ceremonial occasions either. Kind of like Diana’s wedding or her funeral, or Elizabeth’s funeral, it will be interesting to see and will be worth taking a look at.

ragingloli's avatar

Of course not. It is irrelevant clownery.

canidmajor's avatar

Probably not, I’ll see highlights later. I’ll probably tune in to the Kentucky Derby for the actual race, for little to know good reason. That’s about all the Big Event excitement my fragile psyche can take.

Call_Me_Jay's avatar

I have little interest in pageantry. Same with inaugurations, live debates, campaign speeches, etc. around the US presidency. What they do in office is the part to watch.

For a UK king, the most interesting thing would be giving his vast unearned wealth to charities.

canidmajor's avatar

And again with the typos! “Little to NO good reason”. Yikes.
@Hawaii_Jake, you have convinced me to stay away from the keyboard. <eyeroll>

I find this a vulgar phrase that I rarely use but in this case it expresses my feelings. I just don’t give a shit. And I love England, but not the monarchy.

rebbel's avatar

Nope, avoid it like I would the plague.

Acrylic's avatar

Probably, only because my daughter is into that stuff. I really couldn’t care less about the English royals.

LifeQuestioner's avatar

I might catch some of it after the fact. I know it’s a lot of pageantry, but it’s also sad for me to watch it because I really miss Queen Elizabeth. And I’m from the US! But it seemed like as long as I can remember, she was always the Queen of England and she had such dignity and grace. So watching Charles be crowned King would be bittersweet at best for me.

kritiper's avatar

The networks will have taped recordings of the event so I don’t have to get up in the middle of the night to watch any highlights.

smudges's avatar

Ummm…ok, a little embarrassed here. I didn’t know he was going to become a king, and until I read what @LifeQuestioner wrote, I didn’t know what a coronation was.

Jeruba's avatar

@smudges, he already is king. He became so at the moment of Queen Elizabeth’s death.

Corona is the Latin word for crown. Charles will be crowned (not coronated) ceremonially at the official proceedings on May 6th. But he has been king since 9/8/22. There has not been a vacancy in the throne anytime lately. That’s what “The king is dead. Long live the king.” means; It’s instantaneous.

I might watch it. I watched the whole coronation ceremony of Queen Elizabeth. Not too many of us will have got to see two of them. Sadly, the next one is sure to come in a much shorter time.

JLeslie's avatar

Maybe. When is it going to happen?

I don’t mind the royals. A lot of people are very negative about them, but how are they different than other celebrities? They can bring attention to important issues. They put some screwed up pressure on their own family, a lot of families do that. Sure, they could improve how they handle some things, hopefully they will. They don’t hold any official political power anymore, although I guess maybe they have some influence, I don’t know.

mazingerz88's avatar

No. Not really interested. The last time I was interested in seeing Charles was when he and Diana got married and were riding on that horse-drawn wedding carriage. Got an instant crush on Diana.

smudges's avatar

Thank you for the explanation, @Jeruba!

…but how are they different than other celebrities?

When you think about it, you’re right. They didn’t ask to be who they are, they were just born to it.

Brian1946's avatar

Only if they show incidental coverage of it during a newscast.

Otherwise, I’d probably watch the “highlights” if a Flock of singing Seagulls took a crap on the crown. ;)

Kardamom's avatar

Yes. I’m a bit of an Anglophile and have read books, and watched documentaries and dramas about British royalty, most recently The Crown, and Victoria. Just this historical aspect is interesting to me.

LostInParadise's avatar

No, it is all much ado about nothing

Tropical_Willie's avatar

Maybe the highlights. I remember seeing Queen Elizabeth’s coronation almost 70 years ago on newsreels !

flutherother's avatar

I’ll probably watch it though I am no royalist.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I might watch it if I am up at 4am.

I have a question? What is the privacy screen for?

filmfann's avatar

Only if I knew the vengeful ghost of Diana would be there.

Jeruba's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1, I’m not sure, but I think it’s for the ceremonial anointment of oil in nonpublic parts of the body. Believe that includes the chest.

flutherother's avatar

@RedDeerGuy1 Good question. The three-sided privacy screen will shield Charles when he is anointed with holy oil, consecrated in Jerusalem, on his hands, breast and head, shortly before he is crowned at London’s Westminster Abbey on May 6.

Buckingham Palace said it was historically regarded “as a moment between the sovereign and God” with the screen there to protect its sanctity.

Its central design, selected by Charles, is a tree with the names of all 56 countries of the Commonwealth, the international organisation which he also heads. Pictures.

NoMore's avatar

Probably just the highlights. Too much pomp and circumstance for me. I do like Charles though. So sue me.

Pandora's avatar

Nope, I’m not English nor do I care. I think the time of royalty should end.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I’m up. Is starting in 15 minutes.

Jeruba's avatar

So—I did. Preliminaries began at 2:00 a.m. PDT. I started with the Washington Post broadcast but switched after a while to BBC because I got so tired of the nonstop babble of vapid commentary, even drowning out the music. The BBC coverage was much more dignified and unobtrusive. I stayed with it until 6 a.m. my time, missing only the balcony part and the flyover at the end.

My son and I texted back and forth through it. That was fun. I also indulged in some inappropriate thoughts; for example, looking at those tens of thousands waiting out there in the rain for hours, and the four thousand marching or riding in procession, I couldn’t help wondering how many of them needed to pee.

By the time King Charles must have been craving his lunch, I wanted some too.

I’m glad I did that, just as I was glad I stayed for the whole royal funeral in September. I was disappointed, though, that there were no red robes and coronets for the lords and no tiaras for the ladies.

Jeruba's avatar

Also thinking how very weird it must be for Andrew Parker Bowles to see his ex wearing a crown.

Hawaii_Jake's avatar

I watched the highlights on YouTube today. I love the glitz and ceremony.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

I liked the changes to the Coronation oath to protect all faiths and beliefs.

Jeruba's avatar

I found this rather poignant: Queen Elizabeth’s 1953 coronation in 5 minutes.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=VhmR23MVY_g

The commentator makes several references to the little boy standing there who will one day receive the crown.

RedDeerGuy1's avatar

At the beginning. A lady in beautiful robes scratched her eyes and flicked the eye booger on the church floor. The camera was on her when she did it.

Kardamom's avatar

Anglophile here.

I watched the whole thing, although not at 2:00 am. We recorded it. I was watching history happen.
