What is the best weird and tiny museum in your area?

Asked by canidmajor (21589points) May 5th, 2023

I live in New England, which was settled by thrifty hoarders whose descendants organized the crap and made weird and tiny museums that help pay the bills and are a hoot to visit. My kid took me to this one today, http://www.barkermuseum.com/ and it was full of the most bizarre memorabilia. It was a tchotchke paradise/nightmare.

What’s near you?

Please, no charming and elegant art museums, the more bizarre, the better!

A town over there is a museum filled with “artefacts” of the former East Germany.

On the Big Island where I used to live, there is a railway museum. That may not seem weird, but if you think about it, it’s an island. Why would there even be a railway? It turns out it was for the sugar plantations to transport the sugar cane up and down the coast. It’s a fun little museum.

Just down the road from me (maybe 6 miles) we have the Mascot Hall of Fame. It’s an awesome place, took kids there many times.

I’d have to nominate the Bigfoot Discovery Museum in Felton, Cal., a little way south of San Jose. My husband and I had a favorite getaway spot in Felton that we used to visit several times a year, and every time we came and went from the cabin we passed this odd little place. Always said we’ve got to stop in there one of these days. Never did.

Mothman Museum I had forgotten about this place. I have been there twice. Thanks @Jeruba for making me think of it.

It’s two hours from me, but the Spanish Military Hospital Museum comes to mind.

The tour includes an explanation of how the surgeons were very skilled at amputating limbs, and how it was done. They explain how the Spanish medical personnel over 400 years ago used very good clean protocols, which helped to reduce the chance of infection.

You get to see some of the surgical tools and apothecary.

It’s a rather small building. There’s just an overall creepiness about it, but st the same time it’s interesting.

Here’s the website https://smhmuseum.com/

The Glasgow Police Museum is the museum of the first police force in the UK, going back to 1800. Website
The most fascinating, though not in my area is the Stasi Museum a monument to state paranoia.

We have the Drain Tile Museum curated by Mike Weaver in Geneva NY.

And there is the Jell-O Museum in Leroy NY

I live about equidistant from both.

Then there is the Country Doctor Museum, with equipment and tools even a couple of doctor’s cars from almost a hundred years ago.

Los Angeles might be the king of weird little museums. The Neon Museum is cool and so is The Valley Relics Museum. Do you consider collections that belong to random people that display them if asked a museum?

canidmajor's avatar

@tinyfaery, yeah, kinda. Around here, people turned old barns and outbuildings into display areas and call them “museums”.

There is a kazoo factory and museum near where I grew up. I’m almost 59 and haven’t been there yet!

There used to be a tractor museum 20 minutes from me. It was huge barns full of tractors. The property was up for sale, I don’t know if he sold the tractors with it. https://www.tripadvisor.com/ShowUserReviews-g34388-d5859014-r487447039-Paquette_s_Historical_Farmall_Tractor_Museum-Leesburg_Lake_County_Florida.html

@tedibear I’ve been to the Kazoo factory in Eden! I even built a few kazoos! Lots of fun!
While driving around the area I passed a restaurant with a giant statue in front – not sure where it was but you might know. Sound familiar?

By the way, the Eden area has special climate that makes it more suitable for certain crops than the surrounding area.

We have The Rosicrucian Egyptian Museum https://egyptianmuseum.org/ with mummies, near our house.
